I unlocked the explorer maps from the cartographer, who was pretty cheap. (I think 24 paper is cheap, all of the others had 32+), Should I get the ocean monument, or the woodland mansion first? OM: 16 emeralds+compass, WM: 20 emeralds+compass. Price isn't too important, I can find a way to get enough.
Ok, I really needed the totem of undying, but additionally, I think i like the sea lanterns more. What should I do to prepare for the ocean monument?
Enchant your armor, and make sure it's in good condition. I used some diamond enchanted gear, but I imagine if you're skilled enough, iron will work fine. You will need some water breathing potions, so go catch some pufferfish (make them last as long as possible!). It wouldn't hurt to bring some extra food, either (steak is probably preferred). You may also want to bring some night vision potions, as it can be kind of dark in the ocean monument, and the potion will let you see one from the surface very easily! Otherwise, it's just about being aware of your surroundings, and keeping an eye on your health and potion timers. Don't get lost inside!
Note that you can bring doors, place them in water, and use them as air pockets, should you run out of water breathing potions. Unless you kill the three elder guardians, however, you won't be able to get them back quite so easily.
When you think about it, it's not really that useful. It only works when it is in one of your hands, so you have to give up a shield or second weapon. You are making yourself easier to kill, just so you can be saved by the totem. Doesn't make sense to me. I'd rather be better protected or armed and not die at all.
Here's a tip for conquering ocean monuments, bring a stack or two of slime blocks. They are insta-break, even with mining fatigue, so you can use them to block off and empty rooms until you kill the elders.
Thank you all for your help. If i were to use iron armor what enchantments would be necessary? Also, what should I do if my character is on the border of the map i got for the ocean monument. I know it means its far away, but do the directions on the map correspond to North, South, East, and West?
All maps (normal maps as well as the exploration maps you get from cartographers) in minecraft are oriented in such a way as the top edge is north, the bottom edge is south, the left edge is west, and the right edge is east.
Once your player indicator moves off the map (it will turn into a white dot along the edge rather than a white arrow pointing whatever direction you're facing) the game gives absolutely no indication just how far away you are from your target--it is just as likely that you are many hundreds of thousands of blocks away from it as many tens of blocks away, but most are in the "reasonable" range of 3-10k blocks.
Depth Strider III on your boots is quite helpful for moving around quickly underwater. Respiration III on the helmet can mean you don't really need to bother too much with water breathing potions. Torches placed against a wall at head height are better ways to get quick air pockets than doors; water breaks the torch and puts it right back in your hand, so mining fatigue is not a problem and they're re-usable a bunch of times. Jackolanterns can be used both to light stuff up and (by aligning their "face" with the way you came into a room) point the way back out as well.
Definitely bring a high-Power bow (either with infinity or with at least two stacks of arrows) and a good high-Sharpness sword for fighting the guardians. Bow shots don't trigger their thorns defense and can be used to weaken them before a death blow with the sword. Yes, bow range is a bit restricted underwater, but inside the monument, that won't often be a big deal, what with mostly needing to kill something in the same small room as you. Also, getting an arrow in the face tends to make guardians drop their beam-weapon lock on you and have to start their lock-and-power-up-to-fire sequence all over.
You might want to bring a chest (or enderchest or shulker box) or two, which you can quick fill with loot if your inventory gets full and come back for later. Between multiple flavors of prismarine blocks, shards, and crystals, songes, multiple types of fish and inksacs, and your weapons and gear, your inventory can fill up pretty fast, and you don't want to be out of slots when a sponge drops from an elder guardian. A couple extra enderchests stacked together doubles as a source of obsidian for building a nether portal for easier return trips to finish looting the materials of the monument or building a guardian grinder later.

I'd say Ocean Monument, because they give gold and sponges, and access to prismarine via farming Guardians.
Watch out for the crabocalypse. Some say the day will never come. But it will.
Feel free to drop by for a chat whenever.
If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.

Night vision is a priority, but I always do just fine refilling my breath bar with a bucket.

Here's a tip for fast conquering of ocean monuments: dynamite openings in the ends of the arms and the top of the pyramid.
(Put down TNT, gravel on top of TNT, ignite TNT, swim away.)
Swim into the openings and kill the elder guardians you find there.
