My world got generated with almost none of them. I need to find the best way to have them spawn...My base is in the desert, but there are savannas all around. Rabbits, llamas, sheep, chickens & pigs, that I have. But just NO cows. There was a few villages around me, so i stole all their books..now I am out!
I'd rather have a cow farm than a bunny one.
I read on the wiki that it has to do with the seed of the world, and that the same animal will spawn in the same chunk, same location. So what should I do?
If I create a high platform (24 blocks away from us) will cows spawn?
Passive mobs spawn on grass blocks at least 24-32 (not exactly sure) blocks from the player, as long as there is sky access for the grass in question. Just run around in the savanna, kill everything that isn't a cow, and eventually one (or more) will spawn.
I did..but they are all SO far! I'd need to dig a..never ending underground tunnel.
I ended up building a 9x9 grass platform at about 36 blocks high, in the savanna. We are 3-4 players in this world, and i am pretty sure, we are all far enough from it. It's been several days now, nothing have spawn, but i am aware it might take a while..:/
I don't know about multiplayer, but in single player, you also have to kill all the passive mobs in the spawn chunks, as they count towards the passive mob cap as well (and the cap is very low to begin with).

This only applies to worldgen, which spawns passive mobs in roughly 10% of the chunks generated (this results in an average of 4 times as many passive animals as the passive mob cap allows, so basically by exploring you're ensuring that passive mobs will never spawn naturally the way hostile mobs do). This is the same rate that slime chunks occur.
While it's not necessarily as easy as it first sounds, if you run around slaughmurdering the passive population you will have more chances for cows and other passives to spawn. It'll be slow and frustrating if you haven't already explored a large area around you, and trying to run around the spawn chunks to beat back the horde will just make it so that more will spawn there (while you're in the area) instead of closer to base where you want them to be.

This old rule certainly still exists, but with rabbits in deserts and parrots in jungles (and, I guess polar bears in the cold areas?) his efforts will be a little more complicated.
If you have to explore out a long way to find cows, rather than dig a long underground tunnel, there are two other good ways to move animals long distances.
1.) Nether tunnel. Build two portals in the overworld, one at home, one at the place you want to get cows from. Go through the home portal, dig a tunnel to the nether equivalent coordinates of the cow-area portal, and build a nether-side portal there. Now you can get to and from your cow zone with only 1/8 as long a tunnel.
2.) If you've got a coast near your home, explore the shores of that ocean for cows. Bring the cows back to base by sea, either in a boat (haven't tried this myself since they let you put a second mob in a boat with you, but I'm assured this works) or towing them behind your boat on a leash. This waterskiing cow method is one I *have* used, many times, and it works wonderfully. It is a LOT easier than digging a tunnel or dragging a cow overland.
Good luck with your cattle rustling escapades!

Explore! Eventually you'll find some and can bring them home.

You may glean some info about that from this thread - http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/minecraft-java-edition/survival-mode/2864839-how-can-i-get-animals-to-spawn-on-my-jungle-island but as I said, not sure if its different for multiplayer ...
Mintutor now works in 1.13!
