Wasn't sure where to ask this so pardon if this is misplaced. I have a world in survival that I've been playing and building in since alpha. Despite numerous sections of world corruption (it has made for some interesting geographical occurrences) it has taken all the updates rather well except for one. The End. Using the Eyes of Enders they point me to an area where there isn't a stronghold or much of anything for that matter. Could it be that this old world couldn't generate an Ender Portal? Has anyone else run into anything like this? Does anyone else even still have a world this old? Early thanks for feedback.
Do you have every type of terrain generation from alpha to present? I have no idea how many times terrain generation has switched, but it would be awesome to see some kind of map with big rings of changing terrain generation going outward from your base. There's no way I could stand playing on a map like that, but I'd love to see it.
I hosted a private server a while ago. The world was generated when only one stronghold could exist on the map. Even after the changes to allow more than one stronghold, it seemed that no more would generate (in newly generated chunks... duh). I fear that your world may not be able to generate strongholds.
All Strongholds are located at random in a radius between 640 and 1152 blocks from the origin, 0/0. Due to the generation algorithm, the Stronghold proper may extend further in or out of that circle. The three strongholds are spawned at equal angles from the center point of the world (that is, each stronghold is 120 degrees from the others, measured from the origin.)
Strongholds are still limited to 3 in a world.[1] They can be located using an Eye of Ender.
Not sure if they are generated when the map is, or when the chunks are.. if you have a direction from your spawn that you haven't traveled that far away from, I'ld start at spawn and g looking for one in that direction.
Thanks for the help! I'll have to do some adventuring to see if I can get one to spawn. I'll try and post some maps of the world to give you an idea of where one section ends and another begins. Has anyone tried using the eyes of ender without a stronghold having spawned? The spot that the eyes lead me too is close to an abandoned mine shaft but there's little else. I wonder if the eyes will lead nowhere if there isn't a stronghold spawned yet... Also, without counting, I believe that my original (pre-strongholds) world is larger than the 1152 block radius they're supposed to spawn at. Could this prevent them from spawning?
If the 3 locations for strongholds are already generated in a version prior to when they were added then you will not be able to get one. One possible fix might be to delete a block of chunks where the eye is taking you and when the chunks regenerate it should generate the stronghold.
On a side note, how do you live with the messed up biomes and oceans that drop by one block? I could have lived with the messed up tree leaves and straight edged chunk boundaries when new chunks are generated, but the choppy biomes was unbearable for me.

This. I used eyes of ender to find where my stronghold would have been, then I used MCEdit to ungnerate a circle of chunks around that point. Then when the world regenerated those chunks, the strongholds were there.
I haven't had much time to apply any of these ideas to the game yet (I've never messed with deleting chunks before so that should be fun) but I can post a map of the world. The high-lighted area is where the eyes tell me to go. I think it's pretty easy to see where the newer world generating begins and the spot is actually still on the edge of the old chunks. Hope this helps clarify and I'll try to get to figuring this out as soon as work allows. Thanks again!
Just use TooManyItems and give yourself some portal and frame and build it in your house. Your same problem happened to TheSyndicateProject (a popular YouTube commentator) and he built it under his house. The only other this you can do is delete the chunks (like said) and it will regenterate. But that's too hard.
I do have other worlds and many of them have come and gone, but I think this one comes down to sentimental attachment. I've been building in this world for so long, by myself and without any mods that part of me would like to keep it that way. The biggest concern would then be if still 'finding' the end portal is possible in this world. I've found it in others so it's not as if I'm missing out on it. I guess some long explorations are in my future.

YUM YUM YUM!

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
