Wiki sez that only the default terrain for a mushroom biome is now spawn-free (as of 1.0). Does this mean that if I excavate a giant cavern in the island, it'll spawn mobs?
I dunno, I thought that mooshrooms spawned only on mycelium that's in a mushroom biome, and that anything else in a mushroom biome, whether it be a cave, grass, etc. can spawn other things (like creepers or pigs).

If I'm reading that right, only if you place blocks on the floor that didn't generate naturally when the biome was created. Basically any blocks that the biome generated naturally have a no spawn code attached to them. If you place blocks yourself other mobs can spawn on them, if you remove the biome blocks and then place them back again mobs can also spawn on them.
However just excavating a cavern in the biome will not allow mobs to spawn.

I'm pretty sure this isn't true; I've been building an artificial mountain on my mushroom island, and I haven't had even one monster spawn on it.

It means that nothing spawns in Mushroom biomes. Excavate away...you shouldn't get mob spawns unless you travel outside the bounds of the Mushroom biomes or the mobs are spawning outside the Mushroom biome and coming in!
It isn't. That's not how the spawning system works, blocks do not have 'spawning codes'
Look genius. I'm just trying to interpret what the wiki is saying with what I know about spawning, which is obviously more than you know. Normal spawning means that any block with enough space and that is dark enough can spawn hostile mobs. The mushroom biome circumvents this somehow. Because the wiki statement indicated that only blocks generated in the mushroom biome would not spawn monsters I was assuming the blocks in the biome get some kind of a no spawning tag. If not, then perhaps you can illuminate us with your wisdom by explaining an alternate way it would work from a coding perspective?
And to the guy building a big mountain in a mushroom biome, is this in creative or survival? It could make a difference, as there are a lot of different rules going on in creative that don't exist in survival. Perhaps creative placed blocks in a mushroom biome inherit the same no spawning tag?
Let me just say that I haven't built much of anything on a mushroom island and haven't stayed longer than a night on one. So I have little first hand experience to go off of. I also know the wiki isn't always right, so perhaps that statement there is incorrect or out of date. Perhaps the OP can experiment and let us know what he finds out.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
