Wondering how to use your own jar files (ex. a modded client) in the new launcher?
Well here you go: a step-by-step tutorial.
Method 1 Longer, but recommended for the less-geeky.
1. Create a new profile (click: New Profile) with the original version of Minecraft corresponding to your custom jar file. For example, if you have a modded version of 1.2.5, create a profile for 1.2.5.
2. Download/Start Minecraft with this new version. If this version has already been downloaded, skip this step.
3. Go to the Local Version Editor tab on the launcher.
4. Right click anywhere, and click Open Versions Folder.
5. Make a copy of the version you chose in New Profile. Change the name to what you want the new version/modded version to be called.
6. Rename all files under that folder to the same name as the folder, but be sure not to change their extension. For example, if the folder was changed from 1.2.5 to 1.2.5 Mods, then change the files from 1.2.5.jar and 1.2.5.json to 1.2.5 Mods.jar and 1.2.5 Mods.json.
7. Open the .json file in a text editor. Windows users: I highly recommend using Notepad++! I do not recommend using Notepad for this!
8. On the second line, change the ID to the name of the version. This should also be the name of the folder, jar, and json. Be sure that it's still inside of quotation marks. Save and quit.
9. Either mod your jar file, or replace it with your already modded jar file. Make sure the name still matches up with everything else!
10. Start the launcher, edit the profile you made, and choose the newly listed version. Enjoy!
Method 2 Shorter, recommended for the average computer user.
Make sure Minecraft is fully closed before starting!
1. Go to .minecraft\versions\
Need help? Open the launcher, go to Local Version Editor, then right click anywhere and click Open Versions Folder
2. Create a new folder for the profile
Note: Name this folder what the profile should be named.
3. Put your custom jar file in that folder, making the sure that the name is the same as the folder. It is vital that it's the name name. For example, the folder name is ExplosivesMod. The jar file should be ExplosivesMod.jar.
5. Where it says "ID" (line 2) replace <Profile Name> with the name of the folder and jar file.
Note: This should be the name of the folder and jar file
6. Save it as <Name of folder/jar>.json in the new folder. Make sure it gets saved as .json not .txt! You can do this in Windows by surrounding the name in quotation marks.
Note: It must have the same name as the folder and jar!
7. After you have all of this done, start the launcher.
8. Create a new profile and your new version should be an option now!
Notice: Make sure the name of the folder, JAR, and JSON are the same!!

Thanks for this, it showed me how to setup both my modded 1.5.2 and a new 1.6.1.
Do you know how to manage multiple sets of mods through this? You only have one /coremods and /mods folder under the %APPDATA%/.minecraft folder. Do you still need to maintain separate installations of minecraft, use the /versions directory of the different ones and reference these in the "Game Directory" in the profile?

I haven't tried, but with resource packs being in the root, I'd assume it will still be able to access it. Changing the directory would simply make a new ".minecraft," so still, should be fine, though I haven't tried. To sum up what I just said, it should be able to find /mods as in ModLoader and Forge just fine without any changes. If it doesn't work, tell me and I'll try to find a workaround. Also, with this logic and profiles, you could set different directories to have different mods in different profiles.

Have you noticed you can only go back to 1.5.1? Do you want more options? Wondering what is with this strange launcher? Well I can answer those questions, though most of them are rhetorical. I've figured out how to step up profiles and use any version, any jar. Here's the tutorial...
1. Go to .minecraft\versions\
2. Create a new folder for the profile
3. Put inside that folder your new jar, and name it the same thing as the folder
4. If this is a version 1.5.2 or older, open a text editor such as notepad and paste this in http://pastebin.com/4jkxPsY4
if it's 1.6.x then paste this in http://pastebin.com/Mre1cdWa
5. Where it says "ID" (line 2) replace <Profile Name> with well, the profile name.
6. Save it as <Name of folder/jar>.json in the new folder. Make sure it gets saved as .json not .txt!
7. After you have all of this done, start the launcher.
8. Create a new profile and your new version should be an option now!
NOTE: Make sure the name of the folder, JAR, and JSON are the same!! There's no telling what will happen if you do otherwise. I haven't tried it, but most likely you'll get a bunch of extra files downloaded and crashes.
Here's proof this works:

You realize that the launcher isn't finished and these will be added. But a great way to get these early!

Do you know how to get crap out of the appdata\roaming\.minecraft folder? I hate that you can't have different versions of forge or mods installed because you're stuck with one \mods and \coremods folder.
Dinnerbone, if you read this, break out of the "default directory" idiocy and see if you can't allow Minecraft to be installed anywhere the user wishes.

Break out of your idiocy, and realize there's already an option for that in the new launcher. If ModLoader/Forge still jumps back to .minecraft, then it's the mod's fault.

In notepad++, I can't save it as a .json file. Please answer soon.
You have to choose "All Files" and save it as ___.json. You can also surround the title in quotes such as "___.json"

How do you get around the error - Job 'Version & Libraries" finished with 1 error(s)!
Everything is named the same. I know I have done everything correctly yet the .jar file seems to be corrupt. (I copied a 1.5.2 jar file and added Optifine to it if it helps) I am also doing this on a Mac if it makes a difference. (Probably does as I haven't found a good tutorial for Mac yet but hoping you would know)
If there is anything else you need just say so and I will get it.

I'm on Windows, so I don't know if it's a Mac problem, but I doubt it is. I believe there's something different with META-INF on Macs. If you got it working on the old launcher, copy the jar from there.

I just made a new "Profile" yet when I try to select it in the new version I created I only get the versions I currently have. (No error report). If someone would reply that would be very much appreciated.

If you followed all the steps correctly, it should be working. Mojang may have changed something that breaks this, but I don't know because I don't use this anymore.
