Not sure if this is the right section, but a lot of topics concerning lag have been here, so this topic will try to adress all of them. Please Note: I have tested all of these on a laptop, and on servers that haven't lagged before the Beta 1.3 update. Don't even come in here and say: "it's server or client side." It's not. I also was using fast graphics, and normal render distance, getting 20 fps, so it's not the computer. Like I said, all of the servers and my computer was fine before Beta 1.3.
1. This lag problem is for all servers, but may only affect some people.
2. This lag problem ISN'T caused by the server or the client.
3. It seems to be computer, not user, specific.
4. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't.
This is all I got so far.
Symptoms:
1. One minute or more of chat lag.
2. Everyone else is still, or people move choppily.
3. The whole world doesn't generate, and you can fall of the sides.
4. Other people aren't complaining about it on the server.
5. Can't place or destroy blocks within a minute.
6. You take damage about one minute after you preform said damage-taking action.
7. One minute or more of object lag. (workbench using, chest opening etc.)
8. It takes a long time to download the world from the server.
9. Rubberbanding.
Most of the time, it's the chat lag combined with the world generation glitch.
Solutions:
None so far :tongue.gif:
1.4 didn't do crap....
Supposedly, it's RS torch related, but....
It's game-code related. No way to change that, though. Other than next update. *sigh*
Post any info you may have about this problem, or any solutions! You may also post "I have this problem too" to show how many people it's affecting! Helpful Quotes:

I believe I found the problem lies in new chunk loading functions - the game works fast as long as you start it. But as long as you move (and that move triggers chunk loading, possibly triggers more than 1 chunk) the whole game slows to 1-2 FPS! Does not help quitting the world, the only way it to quit the game and start it again, which will not help for long!
After slowdown occurs it uses max CPU while memory or hard drive write/reads are unaffected (checked statistics with Process Explorer) therefore I assume one of things (related) occur, recursive function or infinite loop

Me too, except I play in SMP, and instead of fps lag, real lag lag. I cannot even move, teleport, mine, open chests or nothing and within a minute of nothing happening a crash.
My settings are:
Music - 0% Sound - 31%
Graphics - Fast
Render Distance - Short
Limit FPS - On
View Bobbing - Off
Smooth Lighting - Off
It's not the FPS I'm worried about because I live with it. But the lag is causing me to not play Minecraft because I only play SMP. And I never lagged before 1.3.

I have also had this problem since 1.3, my friends both have it as well. It doesn't matter who is hosting, everyone besides the host will get bad lag and desync (seeing things happen about 30 seconds to 2 minutes after they actually happen). We are all connected via Skype while playing and have no lag or latency in our conversation, but in-game our actions happen about a minute after we actually do them. We all played together for many hours without any problems before 1.3 was released.
Does anyone know if Notch is aware of this problem? It seems to be at least moderately widespread from what I have seen on these forums.

SMP Lag (Not FPS) [Running Mac 10.5.8]
I've probably posted this topic many many times. On some servers, my connection is fine. No lag, nothing. On other servers I log in normally and when I get to the actual world a couple chunks (about 5-30) load without a problem. Then it stops and loads the rest of the chunks slowly. My messages take up to 5 minutes to appear. I do not think this is an internet problem because as said before, some servers load quickly. Nobody else is affected but me.
Regardless if I make my video settings all on low, making my fps like 70, it won't change anything.
After a couple of minutes of sitting there, I am kicked off the server with the message:
internal exception:java.io.IOEXCEPTION: mark/reset not supported
P.S. I am on a 10.5.8 Leopard.

I've had this problem ever since the 1.3 update. I keep trying to log on every few days to see if Notch has fixed it, but so far no joy.
Interesting note: I can log on to my account and server from other computers without the glitches happening, even though one of them has horrible connection speed and the fps goes down the tubes.

I've noticed something previously mentioned but rarely brought up. It appears the client is sending data to the server without issues, but is either not receiving data back from the server fast enough, or, is buffering/queuing the incoming data before applying it to the client's instance of the world. Its like watching a replay.
When I manipulate the world, the other players (without the issue) can instantly see what I have done, but my client is up to 2 minutes behind with the world updates.
The issue has been intermittent for me. 99% of the time I have the issue, and on very rare occasions, I will get a couple of hours without the issue.
The issue is coupled with the Socket Exception disconnect problem.

Made a video of what's been happening to me. Is this the same problem others are having?
No, they connect perfectly fine, it's just problem with some computer's Minecraft code, I guess. I honestly don't know.
The update is the next Beta update (probs 1.4). That may remedy this.
I also want meh Wolfies!
Yes, more people need to see this topic up front. It seems like it's not a TON of people who have this problem, but enough people inexplicably do to make it worth talking about.
I have all the same symptoms as you and others on this thread and I've gone through an extensive checking process to figure out what the deal is.
A bit of extra info: the lag is terrible on my desktop (which runs the game much faster, FPS-wise) and makes the game unplayable on multiplayer, but my laptop (which can't run at a high FPS) doesn't have much latency, and I can play it on low low graphics settings just fine. Same network (desktop is wired to router, laptop connects wirelessly), same account, same server (all servers, obviously), but one computer works and the other doesn't.
More evidence for a computer-specific problem. And no, reinstalling MC completely doesn't help, the issue is quite persistent.

That's funny, because my desktop has like no server lag, yet my laptop has tons. They are both hooked up to the same connection. I don't know what's wrong.
I'm not good with computers....I know basic stuff, but any programming or advanced terms and I'm clueless.
I think i have this problem, we play for like 5min on my server and the lag creeps up and then its unplayable on any other computer other than the servers and no one can connect. servers computer also loses its ability to use the internet though people are still connected just lagging extremely bad (5mins of waiting for chest to open)
I was experiencing similar symptoms with anywhere from 1-25 seconds before things responded. Here are some additional symptoms that I noticed for my particular case. (not necessarily the same 'lag' problem, but it fits)
- Walking to another area and coming back resolved it temporarily.
- Lag builds up slowly over time, adding what I'd guess was something like an additional second for every 20 seconds I was in that area.
- Redstone torches were malfunctioning. It was that bug where they don't reset despite a change in block power, and it affects other redstone torches in the area.
We resolved it by restarting the server and fixing the redstone torches that were causing the problem, of which the latter was probably the true fix. I think, based on what I've seen so far, that the redstone torch bug can cause some kind of timing loop in that area, accumulating a timing delay.
I'll update if I learn anything more or if the same thing pops up again with similar or dissimilar results. I just thought I'd contribute.

Thats not the same problem. If you host a server on your own computer and also play on that computer chances are good that the mem get eaten up so everything slows down. At least your sympthoms sound like that.
Im running the server with 1.5g of memory, shouldnt that be enough?
my brother is having this problem!! almost every single one of the symptoms he has.. chat lag we aren't sure about cause we either use skype or vent to chat. I have no problems what so ever, i run the server on my comp and play on the same comp with no problems what so ever, i use win 7 he has XP. This is a recent thing.. we were able to play with no problems for either of us until a couple days ago.. maybe a week. Something really needs to be done about this! I understand the game is in beta but come on, you don't leave your customers hanging like this.. very disappointed with mojang right now

Unless it's a really good computer, you can't do that. A server really should have about 1GB of RAM to itself, not to mention that's basically the equiv of running like 5 copies of Minecraft on the same computer at the same time.
And yes, maybe a temp sticky until this problem until this problem is resolved? I know how mods hate boatloads of pointless topics, and I can't keep bumping this forever.

Would taking a while on downloading of the map info be another symptom or is it pretty much covered?
