The tl;dr version: Everything worked great until the new launcher arrived. Now the game crashes whenever I break glass or glowstone. After a complete uninstall/re-install, it now crashes after breaking a couple glass or glowstone blocks in succession (in creative) or one block in survival.
There are also plenty of screenshots and info there.
That being said, now that I have figured out how to get the console up so I can see what the launcher is doing, it looks like the same three files are failing to download again and again: Each time I launch Minecraft, it tries to download the same three files every time. It says that it downloaded them successfully, but every time it launches it says that they are only size 43 when they should be 7043, 8060, and 7592 respectively.
I see error code -8whatefver, thats hard to debug. It may be due to a av, ram or other issues
How much RAM you have and how much you allocated?

Apparently after two days of fighting with this thing, I think I found the problem, thanks to that imgur thread detailing how to open the console and have it stay open. I posted this when I was about to give up, but I guess it was half an hour too soon.
I noticed that the three files that were failing to download were all coming from
The key word being "ad." So I whitelisted the entire Minecraft.net domain in my adblocker, and presto, after two days of fighting with the new launcher, I can now break glass and glowstone blocks again.
Now, I hadn't changed any settings in my adblocker recently, so my guess is that for some reason a trio of files, at least one of which is somehow connected to sounds or breaking glass somehow, for some reason download from a folder named "ad". They aren't critical files, as in the game starts without them, but they are fatal as in when the game needs them, it freezes completely.
So anyway, whitelisting *.minecraft.net/* solved my problem, as best I can tell. Either that, or someone at Mojang just pushed out a mini patch to some file and changed the way things download in the past half hour. Either way, I'm playing again and breaking glass and glowstone, so I'm happy.
edit: That is the adblocker built into my security suite, not some browser thing.
Resources are identified by their md5hash code (in hexadecimal), and they are stored in directories based on the first 2 characters of their hash. Assuming md5hashes are randomly distributed 1 out of every 256 resource files will be found in the "ad" directory.
Thanks. I guess I had a lot of time on my hands since I couldn't spend it on Minecraft.
I'd like to think that once someone looked at the files being blocked they might notice that those three files are from a single /ad/ location. I don't know if there's any other files from there or not, but if not, then that's a fairly clear correlation.
To be fair to the security suite, I'd rather not shame it over this. The anti-banner ad is an optional feature that I chose to activate, and it blocked something with a web address like that really looks like a standard banner ad. So pretty much working as intended. For most stuff on my computer, if some random program that doesn't display ads suddenly starts downloading stuff from an ad server, I want it blocked.
As far as that goes, however, it is the 2016 version of commercial (as in paid for) security suite from a company that generally sits in the top 5 of pretty much every anti-virus ranking I've seen.
To be honest, I'm more concerned about the mechanism they are using, and when it changed. I've had the anti-banner thing active for years now, and with the arrival of the new launcher this is the first time it has caused a problem. So I'd like to know if this is something that changed with the new launcher.
Thank you to gerbil for the explanation as to how the downloads work and why there are files coming from a /ad/ folder. That seems like a problematic implementation of things, given how common ad blocking stuff is getting these days. I've got the domain whitelisted now, so I shouldn't have any problems, but someone else might...

It changed back in 2013. At the same time as, or shortly after, the launcher started supporting choosing which version of minecraft you wanted to run. At that point in time Mojang abstracted the resources to make it easier to share code and resource files. You want to run 1.2? The launcher knows you need these specific 150 different files and uses the ones you already have, and downloads any that are missing. If a new sound is added in 1.3, then you only need to download one new sound file to run 1.3 and reuse everything else you already have.
Generally speaking people tended to run into issues like this when they "uninstalled" minecraft or deleted the contents of .minecraft and therefore triggered a full redownload of resource files. Because I have 2 files in the /ad/ directory that were downloaded in 2013, 2 that were downloaded in 2014, and 4 that were downloaded in 2016. Of these only 3 are sound files, and 2 of those are the 2013 vintage files. The newest "ad" sound file is from 2016, MC 1.11 and is a llama sound. So generally speaking you'd be hard pressed to notice this problem as long as you hadn't enabled the adblocker before 2013
I haven't used the new launcher yet, but I got the impression that files are being stored somewhere different than before. The latest launcher may be downloading files that are already on your computer in the old locations.. and therefore acting the same as if you had deleted .minecraft.

Thanks.
Breaking glass has caused crashes for a long time (years) for people using adblockers that block based on the URL.
You can search for the threads on the forum if you want. Here's one of the earliest ones: http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/support/unmodified-minecraft-client/1866762-breaking-glass-crashes-client?comment=3

A adblocker in your hosts file I suppose right?
