So, as all of you know, Mac OS X Yosemite recently came out. But now, you have to install Java 6, for some reason. This seems to be a problem with the Mac itself (happened to me with Mavericks), and not Minecraft. I found a way to run the Minecraft Launcher with regular old Java 7+.
Edit: I had just realized this was all unnecessary, all you have to do is:
Right click Minecraft.app, and click Show package contents, then go to Contents -> Resources -> Java and then make an alias for the Bootstrap.jar . Now you can move that alias to the desktop, and if you want the Minecraft icon, look below the instructions. I won't be deleting the more in-depth instructions, incase its still needed, for some reason.
1. Open a text editor, like TextEdit or TextWrangler. If you're using TextEdit, make sure you make it plain text (press Command+Shift+T).
3. Save it as "Minecraft.command" without quotes, on your desktop. It can be any name you want, as long as it has the .command extension.
4. Open Terminal (Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal), and type the following:
chmod +x ~/Desktop/Minecraft.command
Do NOT press enter right after +x. Press enter after typing the path to the file.
5. That's it! You're done! All you have to do is double click it to run the launcher. The Terminal will run in the background, this is normal. Don't quit Terminal, as this will close Minecraft if you do. Also, there's gonna be another Java icon next to the Minecraft crafting bench. You can right click it and press quit, that won't do anything.
Now, to get rid of the boring icon, you can do this:
Go to your Applications folder, right click Minecraft.app, and press Show package contents. Double click the Contents folder, then double click the Resources folder.
Right click favicon.icns, and press Open with -> Preview. Now press Command+A, or, on the top of the screen, press Edit -> Select all.
Next press Command+C to copy or Edit -> Copy. Finally, go to your desktop and right click Minecraft.command, and press get info. On the top left of the window, left-click the icon, and then press Command+V to paste. Now you can exit the window, and now you have the regular old Minecraft icon.
You can download the required Java right from Apple's support website. Simply install this version of Java and Minecraft will run normally on Yosemite. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572
It's unbelievable how this has been a problem since October 2014 and there has been no official fixes on it from Mojang. They even sell Mac downloads on their site even though they know it won't work. This is total BS....
There is an easier way to do this whole thing. If you look inside the Minecraft.app provided by Mojang, there will be a jar named "Bootstrap". Compile this jar into an app, and you are good to go. You can't distribute it, but you can use it.
