I try and play the demo of minecraft on the minecraft website just to see how it will run on my computer and I can't get it to work. I tried to play the demo first through my chrome browser, it asked me to update Java which I thought was weird because I have already done so in the past. So I updated and reloaded the page. It still asked me to update Java. I tried uninstalling java and reinstalling and still the same problem. I thought that maybe the problem was with chrome, so I switched over to firefox. Tried to play the demo on firefox and all I have now is a blank screen. I don't know what to do, can someone please help? Here's my computer specs.
Dell inspiron 1545
Windows 7 professional, service pack 1
Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU T4200 @ 2.00GHz 2.00 GHz
3 GB RAM
Mobile Intel(R) 45 Express Chipset Family (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM 1.1)
32-bit Operating system
I downloaded it and put in username and password but it doesn't work. I'm assuming because that is the client you pay for, which would defeat the whole purpose of me trying this out before I buy.

Can you be more descriptive on what is happening when it 'doesn't work'? What happens exactly? It's not clear if your username and password is being accepted but the game is failing to launch or what.
A few things to check are make sure the launcher is on your desktop. After you login successfully the game should download the game files. These will be stored in a folder named .minecraft in your appdata folder. If the download is happening and completes but you get a black screen when trying to start a world then your issue is with your graphics drivers likely not supporting OpenGL.

This is what happens when I try to play the browser demo. I click the link, the page loads, but the part where the minecraft is supposed to load remains a white rectangle. My java is up to date (Java 7). I even tried to load it on firefox. Same results.
As for the minecraft launcher thing. It is on the desktop. I open it up to log in. It says the log in failed. I created another account just to see if I get the same results and I did, log in failed. Correct me if I'm wrong but can't you only download minecraft if you PAY for it?

I believe how it works is If you create a minecraft account but it doesn't have a purchase of minecraft associated with the account, then it will let you run a demo version with a limited play time. There used to be a solution for a common issue with running the demo however all the links I'm finding to the main thread are no longer valid and I can't remember exactly what it was anymore. It must have been moved or deleted for some reason.
I know it says its for ubuntu, however the fix for getting the launcher demo version to work for windows is similar. Basically you download the launcher, then manually download the client minecraft.jar as it describes. Create a .minecraft folder in your user/appdata/roaming folder and place the jar file in there. The appdata folder by default is a hidden system file so you may need to change your file settings in the control panel to 'show hidden files/folders'. Then try using the launcher again and see if it works.
Don't ask me why it doesn't work like it should, probably due to security measures and it not being a priority for them to get a better fix.

Tried that and it didn't work. It keeps telling me "Login Failed". Also underneath the options of Try Again and Play Offline it says (Not Downloaded). Wouldn't it detect something since I put the minecraft.jar file into the .minecraft folder?
When I try to play minecraft demo It shows me "CertificateException Your security configuration will not allow granting permission to self signed certificates"
i have the latest version of java and the demo version of minecraft downloaded but cannot run it, the message is "EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION", any ideas what it might be? p.s. rodabon is right that if you create an account but dont pay you can play for three game days at a time

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

Perhaps try IE instead of chrome?
