I recently upgraded my Windows 7 laptop to Windows 8. The installation was a success, however, the one problem I am having is that I can not play Minecraft on my laptop anymore. It ran perfectly fine before the upgrade, however, now it just displays this error message:
Bad video card drivers!
-----------------------
Minecraft was unable to start because it failed to find an accelerated OpenGL mode.
This can usually be fixed by updating the video card drivers.

My video card is an ATI Radeon Mobility HD 4200 series
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
A side note, when I attempt to update it by going to Device Manager > Right click my display adapter > Update driver software it says that it is already up to date. Obviously it is not...

You have to go to the manufacturer website and get the drivers from there.
Windows Update does not provide working drivers.
The problem I am having is that AMD does not have a driver update for my graphics card for Windows 8, as far as I can see (If you can find a link, please provide it). Is there a workaround that anyone knows to fix this problem temporarily?

I tried installing the driver again, and it did not work. However, a friend of mine by the name of Fivekills did remote support on my laptop for 6 hours while I was sleeping and he managed to find out the problem. The issue was that my default graphics driver was being set to the one provided by Microsoft rather than the one provided by AMD. So simple, yet so complicated. Anyway, Thank you @Syfaro for your help.

X_clucky, can you post how you changed the setting so that it didn't automatically choose the default microsoft driver, i'm having the same problem and was hoping to fix it. thanks!
Sorry for long response time, I am not 100% sure if he did it this way or not, but the instructions as I remember are as follow:
Go to Control Panel
Go to Device Manager (You may have to change the view of control panel to see this)
Expand Display Adapters by clicking on the arrow
Right click your graphics card and select Properties, for example, mine was named AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200
Go to the Driver tab
Click Update Driver
Select "Browse my computer for driver software"
Select "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
Select the driver that is NOT from Microsoft Corporation
Click Next
It should now install the driver software, this may take a few minutes. During the proccess your screen will go black, but it should come back shortly after, this is because in order for your computer to change your driver, it must uninstall the old driver which displays graphics on your screen
You have successfully changed the driver of your computer, you should not need to restart, however, if you are still failing to play, do so now

When I got to step 9 the only options that I have to update is Microsoft Basic Display Adapter and Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM 1.1) What do I do about that? D;
I too have this problem. I have attempted all of these fixes, and then some, even modifying the driver installer and the BIOS settings. Can anyone help?

Hm, strange. Try installing the driver from the Intel website http://downloadcente...t.aspx?lang=eng and then retry step 9. You may be able to update the driver simply by letting your computer locate the driver itself on step 7, however, more than likely, it will go with the default windows driver.

AMD doesnt support windows 8 either, but the windows 7 driver works on windows 8. My advice to you, give it a try. if all else fails and your screen goes black and gets stuck black, just go in safe mode and switch back to the Microsoft driver.

Follow my instructions up to step 4 this will tell you what graphics card you have. Now all you have to do is go to the graphic card manufacturer's website (AMD, Intel, etc.) and download the driver for your card. then proceed with steps 4 through 12.
