When I run minecraft, the game starts and goes smooth, no problems on that, until suddenly, at a RANDOM point, with RANDOM interactions (turning around, breaking a block, pretty much EVERYTHING you do), the game freezes, my mouse disappears, and I can't do anything else. THOUGH: The music keeps playing, my skype calls keep working, and I can talk with everybody as if nothing had happened. None of my screens react to anything, though, and stay frozen. Can't Ctrl+Alt+Del nor Ctr+Shift+Esc nor close ANYTHING. The computer just stops reacting to everything.
I am running windows 7, on a 2-screen computer. I have been having this problem for MONTHS now, and every try I gather up enough courage to try and play it again with my friends, this is what I get. I demand a solution, since I have already suffered this issue enough to consider myself entitled to do so.
I hope somebody reads this and can give a solution, or a solution to a similar problem, and at least try to help, even if it doesn't work. I will appreciate all the answers I receive and thank all the help I get.
Your cards must be relatively new and have the latest drivers in order to keep two monitors running smoothly at the same time. My guess is that by having Minecraft open on one monitor and Skype open on the other you're overloading your graphics card. Either disconnect one monitor, stop multi-tasking while playing a somewhat GPU-heavy game like Minecraft, or get a better graphics card.
I've been dealing with the same problem for many months. I can turn off everything but Minecraft and usually within the first hour it freezes and I can't do anything on my laptop until I turn it off and on. I would like to know why that happens as well so I could try to prevent it.
I am having the same problem, and I am really annoyed, and I feel I am effectively being cheated as I love the game, but other people seem to having the same problem, and there doesn't seem to be a solution. It definitely isn't a problem with my graphics card, as it can run every other game at highest graphics, and it runs minecraft at 100fps until the crash. The only reason I can think of is the fact that I have windows 7, as my mac can run it without crashes. If anyone has any solutions, please post them.
I have the same problem, running on vista 64bit, dual monitors, everything's updated, amd 8cores 3.1's | EAH 6850 CU - latest catalyst. 8g of Ram.
only happens a few times a day then I can run it fine for the rest of the night. weird stuff, only happens with Minecraft
Skyrim, BF3 all run flawless.
I'm not sure when exactly it started, maybe a week or more ago, it was freezing after maybe 5-10 mins of playing. But now it completely freezes my PC before I can even load my world.
Things I've done to try and fix the issue.
Deleted all minecraft data (\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft) and re downloaded the exe and setup again.
Uninstalled Java (6 update 31) and installed newer version (7 update 3), I had both 32 and 64 bit versions of 6u31 installed, now just running the 64 bit version for 7u3.
Uninstalled my Video drivers (AMD Catalyst 12.3 WHQL) and installed the 12.4 Betas.
Tried the 12w15a Snapshot build of Minecraft.
Nothing has solved the issue.
It seems not to COMPLETELY lockup my PC. I had music and a video playing at the same time (differnent occasions) and the audio always continues to play. And I can still access my shared folders over the network. But I cannot do anything locally from my machine, mouse or keyboard wont respond, caps lock light wont toggle on KB, no Ctrl+Alt+Del.
I left the audio playing on the video when it froze once and it was still playing the audio from the video about half an hour later with the PC still not responding.
The only way to fix it is to do a hard restart on my PC.
After the restart I have looked through the Event Log on a couple of occasions after a crash and haven't been able to see anything in the log corresponding with the time it freezes.

I am having the exact same issue, I think after watching You Tube videos and reading various other posts it has something to do with the entity count getting out of control i.e. Villagers breeding non stop.
As you can see from my count it is out of control and I just cant play this game anymore until Mojang decide to fix it!
I play with no MOD's but decided to installed Single Player Commands to use the /KILLALL command, as soon as I did this the game runs perfectly so its defiantley the Villagers, I just need to find the village in question and nuke it to continue playing without MOD's again!
Reducing the process to single core seems to have solved my problem. I cant identify whats causing it, will try updating jre and test again sometime but disabling one of the cpu cores from the task manager helps freeze issue.
minecraft freezed my computer, and I had to unplug it and plug it back in to get it back on. then, I tried to run minecraft again, and the graphics card was apparently bad. and so I went to go on my minecraft alternative, roblox. that dident work either. is that what happened to you?
when my game freezes, i simply press ctrl+alt+delete.
I think they meant their computer wouldent respond. I tried ctrl ald delete and nothing happened. I think they may have had a graphics card problem too. I was working on a huge restone painting programme, and then it suddenly crashed, and there were 2 rows of green lines on the minecraft screen (It isnt what it sounds like for some people, but I couldent have taken a screenshot.) When I re-booted my computer after the crash to try to play minecraft again I had to ajust the resolution.
