This started just a week or so ago. I just right click to place a block and about half the time it quickly places the first and then another on top. This is really annoying and I know it's only a minecraft problem because this isn't occurring in any other games or applications. or maybe its my mouse idk, all i know it that only in minecraft is it an issue.
just be sure that you just click, instead of holding it down. the rate of placing blocks is really high, and it does take some getting used to.
thats the thing, I am just clicking. If i intentionally hold it down, it doesnt place blocks nearly as fast as this annoying glitch does. why do i get these problems? goddam

Could be a physical mouse problem, try popping that button off and pushing it back in, gunk can get in between the button, or the button sensor can start to fail which can cause multi-presses of a button.
After a quick google search I was lead here, to discover that I'm not the only person with this issue. At first i thought it may have been my mouse, so I cleaned out my mouse and gave it a good inspection to find nothing is wrong with it at all. This happens regardless of what type of mouse I have connected to my computer. Including the touch pad (because I'm playing on a laptop).
Happens to me also... I just put it down to lag as I tend to do that a lot.
I'll right click to place a block and it'll place 2 very quickly and drop me to 5fps or so for a moment. Also happens if I try to harvest my reeds. Doesn't bother me too much except for when I am placing obsidian...
Happens to me as well. Constantly. Very frustrating--I have to stand just so to prevent it from happening. It's not a click speed issue--I've varied click speeds. Even messed around with the "double click speed" settings for my mouse. So far, no change.
I started to build a new building in a different, non-snow, biome and it seems to happen a lot less. Mainly just happens now when It's changing from night to day and back.
I'm having this problem constantly. I'm wasting half of my glass because of this. I've closed out unused programs (iTunes, Firefox), went into the taskbar and closed out unnecessary processes, I even defragged and did a virus scan on my laptop. Still lags like the dickens. I'm losing a lot of resources and constantly dying from the freeze-up when an enemy comes on screen...
I just wanted to announce that I am having this problem as well in the hopes that someone will take note and find a solution. This problem started recently - in the last two weeks - on a world I've been developing for over a month.
That's really all I can add to what else has been said on the subject: placing glass and dirt blocks twice for every one block placed, can't shut doors at certain angles, etc.
1) Clean your mouse
2) Check mouse double-click speed in the settings for your mouse (in Control Panel On Windows)
3) (probably not it) Change mouse sensitivity in Minecraft options. It is the only in-game setting to effect the mouse.
So as I posted before, I had this problem. I'm not exactly sure why or how I fixed the problem - or if it will help anyone else, but here is what I did.
I noticed that when I started a new world that the problem went away. I saved a copy of my World elsewhere. I then renamed the World1 folder (just to see if I could rename it that way). Then upon opening Minecraft again, World1 was no longer there, so I started a new game. Then I promptly deleted the new World1 folder, and renamed my old one back to World1 so I could use it again. My world reappeared in the 'Open World' screen and since then the "double-clicking issue" has been almost none (still occasionally happens when near to the surface).
So my guess is simply moving or renaming your world's folder, running the game briefly, and then replacing it back in the original spot may solve the issue.
If that makes any sense, give it a try. Again, make a copy of the folder for your world before you try anything though.
I have had this issue before as well, and so has my roommate. He is using windows xp and I am using Linux so its an obvious issue that is related to the game and not to system specs. The only system related thing could be that were both on mulicore systems. I commonly replace some of the files in the .minecraft folder due to another issue of stuck keys in Linux but replacing them seams to not solve the issue. Also this issue has cropped up recently as well it was not occurring when I started playing the game either. I will have to mess around and see if i can get it to go away but so far its been nodice.

I have been lost in the nether for a few days now.......
This has been happening to me for a few weeks now as well.
Not only does it sometimes spam an extra block, but I also notice it when I place things in chests/workbenches/etc. If I try to just put a certain number from a stack of items, it will often spam the item down in 2's when I click once. It's very frustrating.
I also have no idea what the issue is. I'm using a Razor Naga gaming mouse so I'm certain it isn't my hardware. I don't have this input problem with any other program.
If anyone could offer some insight, that'd be a life-saver!
help please!

oh and reduce render distance and dense fog

is there a way to revert back to older versions?
very annoying when you go to place a torch and the game slows down and places an extra torch nearby.

maybe if we show our computer specs we might see a pattern between the double clicking problem and how well our computer will run MC
also, do macs get the glitch
I don't want this to effect what I think about minecraft.
well here's my specs:
manufacturer: Acer
Model: Aspire L3600
Processer: Intel core 2 Duo CPU E7200 @ 2.53GHz 2.53 GHz
RAM: 3.00 GB
check your settings and if not reinstall minecraft.
