NOTE: This is only for people trying to port forward on a Telus internet connection.
Recently, I wanted to put a second internet connection in our house. In British Columbia and Alberta, the two popular choices of Internet providers are Telus and Shaw. We already had a Shaw connection in our house, so we got a connection from Telus and set everything up.
Things seemed to work great at first, until I noticed that none of my ports that were forwarded in my routers were not actually working. After checking multiple times, I figured the ports were being blocked at the WAN level. We called up Telus, and after talking in loops with the guy we got on the phone with, we were told that ports are blocked by default and we could not manage our ports. The only way to not have our ports blocked at the WAN level was to purchase a business connection. The fact that I had to pay more just to do something that any other provider offers along with a home connection was just ridiculous, so we cancelled our connection.
However, Telus does have a few ports open by default. I do not know these since I don't have a connection from them anymore, but there is a set of ports that are allowed at the WAN level. If you use a port checking tool like canyouseeme.org, you can use trial and error to try to find these. If someone knows these ports, let me know. 25565 and 21 are not allowed, so Minecraft servers and FTP clients will not work.
I've ran into a handful of users who have setup their ports properly, but have a Telus internet connection in BC/Alberta, blocking all incoming connections to their network. I hope there's a few people out there that this helps.
I've also never heard of an ISP that does this before. If there's any others, maybe we could make a list of them here with the possible allowed ports?
I live in BC and have internet with Telus, and my ports work perfectly fine. Always have.
Yup, same here. I was a total Noob regarding Port Forwarding, but after learning a few things I had no problem setting up a MC server on my Telus Router.
I use to be with telus and setting up ports was easier than with shaw. I'm in BC as well. Possibly they blocked it for Alberta for some reason? I could be wrong. Also BC is best.
