I am having massive problems with making this server work. I am using AWS to do this, and furthermore, it is on Amazon Linux. Within the box, there is no gui, and I cannot run every command I found for Linux. I followed this tutorial as well as the next page to set it up, although I used the nano command to open the server.properties file and edit some of those. However, I cannot connect once I started up the server, even when I reset the properties to default. If I try, I get this message:
Failed to connect to the server.
Internal Exception: java.io.IOException: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.
I tried multiple changes to the server.properties file with no luck. Furthermore, I double checked the eula file to find it does not exist. I manually created the EULA and this also didn't make a difference.
In short, I am a noob at setting up a server, and also a noob at Linux commands, and much more so with Amazon Linux. I am wondering what I am missing that I need. Once the server is running, I know how to manage it, but setting it up is where my problem lies.
Thanks to those who can help, as I am highly confused as to why it is failing when I followed the directions to a T and even tried temporarily allowing all connections to enter and exit the server. Nothing is working.
EDIT: I thought I would clarify: I didn't follow the directions exactly due to updates that occurred since then. I did adjust for the updates and did things the way EC2 does them now.
EDIT2: I figured out the problem. The address I used led to Minecraft 1.5.2 for some reason. It is fixed and functional now.

I'm hoping to have this running by 2moro, so please help.
