When I try to start up a modded minecraft_server.jar I get an error, "Invalid or corrupt jarfile minecraft_server.jar" is this because I'm trying to run a modded jar without one of those server mod/client things? Bukkit, Canary, and the like? Or is it something else entirely? I've tried finding this information via browsing the forums and wiki, but can learn nothing. Perhaps I am merely oblivious. At any rate, any and all explanation of how servers/mods run together would be greatly appreciated.
By the way, I run an up to date Mac, I've been running the vanilla server without problem, and I've had no problem with modding in SSP. (But then again, I've only really added Single Player Commands and used the MCpatcher. Not too complicated?)
You can't use singleplayer mods in SMP, obviously. This means if you download some singleplayer mod and put it in minecraft_server.jar, it won't work -> "corrupted". Re-download the server file.
Quite obvious indeed. Thats why I used what were supposedly SMP mods as per stated in this thread, and more specifically, the simplified update of this mod, here.
And perhaps if someone could help me understand what Bukkit and all that business is, I could more readily take your advice into consideration.
Okay, I understand that you want me to use Bukkit. But what I'm looking for is technical explanation/help. I see that it is a server mod that runs user created plugins. I am more interested in making minor tweaks to my server without downloading a million and one things.
My question is about why things went the way they did with the invalidity/corrupt nature. I did as the thread instructed, and yet I got the results I did. Now, since something had to process the jar to tell me something was wrong, I'm wondering what the source of the problem is. Perhaps it has to do with the server properties, or something that I don't know about or don't understand. I am not here to have links given to me without explanation. I merely wish to understand what is going on, and how these things work.
I just downloaded the .jar from minecraft.net again, downloaded the .class from the mediafire upload i made. And it run just fine, no errors and work with default settings. How do you startup the server?

You should use Bukkit and plugins instead.

Grab latest recommended CraftBukkit from Jenkins:

And plugins from Bukkit forums. :smile.gif:

^ That is one example of running a server.
