New to minecraft (you can thank the YogsCast for mine and my partners purchases!), and am trying to set us up a server at home to play with.
have downloaded the client and server software from the site (assume its the latest?) and got the java issue sorted to start the server, however I just get kicked when I try join the server...
My server.properties file is..

Your situation is weirdly identical to mine (which is how I found this post). Not only have I been getting the same error message, not only did I assume I got the lastest server software from the site (more on this in a minute!), but I also play this game with my wife and too bought the game immediately after watching Yogscast's Survival Island adventure!
My problem was that I downloaded the old server software after doing a google search for: minecraft server. This lead me here: http://www.minecraft.net/servers.jsp
At the top of that page is a link for downloading server software, with a very recent date underneath that suggests everything will be just fine if you use that software. But no, everything will not be just fine at all. This is the server for the outdated classic version of Minecraft!
Sorry to dig that issue up again.
I still got the same problem. Tried to download it multiple times and deleted and re-installed minecraft and minecraft server several times.
When my friend logs in from the PC in the same local network it just works. If I try to connect to the server running on my machine (localhost) I sometimes see the game for a few seconds, sometimes can't connect at all. Anyway after a few seconds I receive the "Internal exception: java.io.IOException: Bad packet id 223" error. When I delete my char.dat after the crash, it is possible to log back in for a few seconds before it crashes again. In the meantime all of my friends can play without any trouble.
My System:
Windows Vista Business, SP2
Core Duo with 3Ghz, 4gb RAM
Minecraft Server Version Beta 1.5_02
started with:
java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui
I tried to run the minecraft-server.exe as admin (rightklick run as administrator) and do the same with the minecraft.exe, but didn't help.
Any other good ideas ?
have you installed any mods on your server? also, post you server.properties
java.io.IOException: Bad packet id
Researching
Problem:
The client is sending a packet to the server which doesn't contain what it promises to. This raises an error on the server's side. It maybe due to a substantial difference in system clock time on the server compared to the client.
Solution:
Both the server and the client should synchronise their system clocks with time.windows.com:
Right click the time in the system tray. Click "Adjust Date/Time". Go to "Internet Time" tab, and apply common sense in order to acheive the above.
This is sort of digging up an old thread. Sorry about that.
But I'm getting the Bad Packet ID 14 also.
I got a new computer and now I cant get onto a server I went to all the time on my old computer.
I just get the Bad Packed ID 14 message.
Help?

The correct place to download the server software is:
http://www.minecraft.net/download.jsp
I discovered the mistake after finding this tutorial:

Fingers crossed for you guys too!
Sir, you are a scholar and a gentleman. Cheers!
