For as long as we've been playing, my girlfriend and I have wanted to be able to set up a Minecraft server for just us and play online. However, with all that port-forwarding nonsense I never really gave it a go, unfortunately.
Now I believe I should have another crack at it, but I don't know if I'll actually be able to run it.
I have 4GB of RAM on this gaming rig, but the main concern is my download/upload. It's approximately 7.11 download and a measly 0.31 for upload (Australia). I've heard that upload is what truly determines whether you can run it or not, and I'm fairly sure that won't cut it.
My girlfriend only lives 20-30km (or I suppose miles) away if that makes a difference. If you need her upload/download then I can get that, although she's probably not up right now and I want to host the server on my computer.
If I can definitely not run a Minecraft server for only two people, is there an alternative? We have found nearby Minecraft servers before but we dislike the idea of making something really good and then having it destroyed by an occasional griefer. I'm sure no matter how far your travel away from spawn, someone will still find your home/other structure, and naturally that person would be a jerk.
And even if we tried that, can we actually set our house or whatever we build as our spawn?
Thank you in advance, and sorry if I sound a bit silly for even contemplating running a server if my upload speed really is too slow.

from what ppl say it's about .25 mb/s upload / players, if you are to host it at home and connect LAN to it only your girlfriend would be going through your upload so it should be fine, not the best but it should work
Your upload speed is God awful. With that being said, if you don't mind some log, then go for it! If it's just the two of you and the game actually works, then the lag issue is completely up to you. The only way to know for sure is to just set it up. There are some thorough guides out there, but really:
1. Download minecraft_server.exe (i'm assuming you are on Windows) and run it from a folder (I like the name Minecraft Server). Then, add both of you to the op.txt file.
2. For port forwarding, go to http://portforward.com/ and choose your router. Then, click Skip This Advertisement in the top right corner. Then, look for MineCraft Server and it will give you step-by-step instructions for your router to forward port 25565.
3. Then, use http://whatismyip.com to get your external IP.
4. Give your girlfriend YOUR_EXTERNAL_IP:25565 and have her connect. Then, for you to connect, just type localhost.
5. If it works, SUCCESS!
The alternative, of course, is to find a server that has some anti-griefing in place. I'm sure you could find one if you looked hard enough/ran really far away. :smile.gif:
So you guys are suggesting that I should try and see if I can host it? I will try it later, as I don't particularly have time right now.
However, thank you for such speedy replies!
@anorym: Yes, that's what I heard as well. Wouldn't I myself count as one of those players though? Or because I'm hosting do I not get included?
The server's also only going to be online when I'm on it. Definitely no 24 hour one or whatever those are.
Sorry, my server knowledge is quite poor.
EDIT: I've been able to get a local server up before, but because I didn't mess with port-forwarding I never got my girlfriend to join and test.
If I can't get this running, I shall try your alternative.
Yes! No harm in trying it out. Worst case scenario, you learn about port forwarding and Minecraft server setup. Best case is that you get one setup and can play with your girlfriend. :]

if you are playing on the same pc or at least on the same local area network you won't go through the isp to get to the server just when you connect in multiplayer connect with
localhost
instead of the ip address
so it will just go through the router and back to the server without using your upload speed
You guys are pretty god-damn awesome in your responses. I can't try setting it up right now, but I definitely will try later today. I will post back in this thread the results.
If you have additional tips, please do not hesitate to continue posting.
But seriously, any other community probably would've left me in the dust.
@anorym: I love wikipedia. Here's a couple key points they mention: In computer networking, localhost (meaning this computer) is the standard hostname given to the address of the loopback network interface.
Communicating with the loopback interface in an identical manner as with another computers on the network, but bypassing the local network interface hardware, is useful for the purposes of testing software.
Connecting to locally hosted network services, such as a computer game server, or for other inter-process communications, can be performed through loopback addresses in a highly efficient manner.
So, yeah, it will not actually utilize the Internet at any point. Looking at my network monitor (that I run on my MC server), it does cause traffic to be counted as in and out, but it's only through your own network.
@Harrishun: Good luck! It helps to ask questions when MC.net is down -- I think some of us come here to kill time when we can't play. :]
Just got the server working using Hamachi. If this works I won't have to deal with port forwarding, but I have no way to check because my girlfriend isn't online yet. When I get her online I will hopefully update this thread with a success post.
Thanks again to all who contributed.
Hamachi worked!
Thank you for all your help! If not for you guys I wouldn't have even bothered trying to get it work because of my abysmal upload speed.
