Hello all. I've been trying to set up a server for me and maybe some of my friends. I've been following the setting up a server tread on the minecraft wiki and it told me to download the minecraft server exe and double click it. The problem is my computer(Windows Vista) says it's an unknown file and I can't open it. I was wondering what I'm doing wrong. I have downloaded the latest java and done everything right so far on the wiki page.
When you download the exe, make sure it looks like Minecraft_Server.exe
If it is missing the .exe at the end, and you don't see the grass icon, then it's not going to work.
You'll need to add the file extension .exe
As an alternative, you can download minecraft_server.jar.
Put that in a folder.
Open up notepad
Type
@echo off
java -Xms1024M -Xmx1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui
PAUSE
The pause was added because I <3 Orcworm.
Save that as launch.bat
Save as All files
Save it in the same folder as minecraft_server.jar

One more thing though. The server seems to be working good but I noticed that people on the ops list can spawn items. I was wondering if there is a way to only allow certain people to spawn blocks(I want there to be effort when building a town).
Op is pretty much the same as admin on a vanilla server.
There are a myriad of ways to control blocks on a server using plugins.
Now that you're getting further into server administration, you may want to check out SimpleServer wrapper.
It's fast, stable, easy-to-use, and has a ton of features built in.
how do you set up ranks with the current minecraft_server.exe? ranks such as owner, admin, moderator, etc., etc., etc.
Since you're moving more indept with the server, I'd suggest using another server program other than the default one. I'd suggest Bukkit; afterwards you can download plugins that will enable groups such as Permissions or GroupManager.
Thanks a lot.

Double click launch.bat to start your server.
You will need to make sure you followed the steps to setting up the Java path variable from minecraftwiki.net http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Tutorials/Setting_up_a_server
Well that was easy. Thanks a lot.

Thanks again.
A ham for you!

Just follow the installation instructions, a little bit of reading on their wiki and you're good to go.

Edit:
Since this thread got bumped, SimpleServer wrapper is now out-of-date.
