i have a duel core amd athlon processor 4400+ 2.3ghz
3 gigs of ram
nvidia geforce 9600gt graphics card
Windows 7 ultimate 32 bit
my internet speed is 10mb/d .5 mb upload road runner
Me and my 3 friends starting playing minecraft i got them into it so we decided to play online we ought the game and im trying to get the server up
now the prob is we get in and we have terrible lag all we want is to have a server for 8 or less ppl can my comp handle it or do i need to replace pieces i run the server by itself wen im off the game while others play and there still laggy
Computer should be fine although running the server and the client on the same PC isn't a great idea.
Your issue lies with your internet connection. 500kbps upstream is in no way enough to handle 8 people, it's barely enough to reasonably handle 2.. so you might want to look into upgrading your connection with your ISP or getting a VPS and running the server on that.
ok ill try that but my friend tried his as well he has similiar stats for internet but was able to hold 4 of us no prob as for me i cant hold my friend alone or me alone so before i upgrade my upload i need to figure that out

umm idk how to give it more ram. i followed guides to run the server but none said to give ram so im guessing half a gig when i look at my task manager before server its like 800 when i launch it its like 1.3
ok ty ill try that if this dosnt work is there another option?
not really. your issue mainly lies with your internet connection speed. If your friend can run his server with 4 players on the exact same internet package then you probably have stuff in the background using bandwidth. torrents? streaming music? things like that. But 500kbs still technically isnt enough for 4 players
That message happens when the server is trying to read/write data to the harddrive faster than the harddrive can supply it. It has been a persistent issue with Minecraft and there's really not a whole lot you can do about it. I've heard and experienced that using a faster harddrive (SSD or 10K RPM drives) can alleviate this message for the most part but you'll still encounter it from time to time.
It's a harmless message for the most part and you can usually just ignore it.
but the game chugs wen i try to use the same comp wen loading the sever and playing it hence the spaming of that message so do i need more ram or a better processor? or is that just mind craft itself and not me?
really i hosted rainbow six games for 12 ppl all had green ping but if this ram thing dosnt work ill try upping the bandwith
rainbow six has/had a far more efficient server engine than minecraft and it took much less bandwidth per person to play which is why you were able to do so many people. Minecraft server atm, is very much NOT optimized so the requirements are much higher.
they say that generally you want 100kb of ram per player. I've had 30 people on my server and i'm running everything off my computer, none of them had lag, and i could still surf the web. Look into upgrading your router if you have an older one, make sure everything is port forwarded, make sure you're not overloading your network by downloading stuff while you have your server up.. and if you're planning on running it 24/7 and hosting lots of players, start looking into saving up for a dedicated server, or you can pay a company like.. 30-50+ bucks a month to host it for you.. but you still might not get the results you want. I'm saving up for a dedicated server made out of a computer. Right now on my computer that I use as my server, i'm running a quad core processor, a dedicated 2 TB of harddrive space, 8 gigs of ram. Your video card has no use for the server since it doesn't process the graphics for anyone but yourself.

im not to serious i just want to play with the 4 friends i brought to this game so if i need a new comp part to play this game ill use this game as a excuse lol

just did it i was at 922mb and im at 1.09gb
it is definently the internet connection which is causing lag. You need a dedicated connection if you are hostin more than 5 people.

Can't keep up! Did the system time change, or is the server overloaded?
im guessing thats a upload speed prob?
This is a common error that always occurs in server logs. I would ignore it unless it comes up ALOT.
If it does then your server is stressed.
but when im off it it will be said once or twice
It's a harmless message for the most part and you can usually just ignore it.

You're basically overloading the harddrive / cpu causing things to become out of sync which causes lag.
