absolutely not you need to host your server on a dedicated system or a shared vps at least. I host aserver for 3 people (my self included) on a vps with 3gigs of ram. You will need this ram if your server is going to be taken seriously because as of right now minecraft has some serious memory leak issues which, if your sever is not regularly restarted will make your server run like ****. Obviously more ram = less restarts but with a 3 gig server and 3 players I have a script to restart the minecraft server every hour, running on centos. Also your going to need plenty of bandwidth you can forget about running a server off of your home internet properly
for 4-5 people a modest pc with 2-3GB or so ram, even running win7, is plenty, so long as the cpu is even remotely powerful.
as for the person mentioning a netbook? don't make me laugh. a lot of those have celeron processors in them sub 1GHz, some have a single core atom at 1.6GHz with hyperthreading, and a few have a dual core atom. Any desktop will beat that in cpu power handily, and so will any ddr2 based laptop If the system has 2 DDR2 ram slots it is *NOT* a netbook. I also have a miniature desktop I use for file serving which has an atom N330 (dual core plus hyperthreading) in it which I test-ran a server on. with 5 people it was heavily loaded but it worked pretty well, actually. I had 4GB of ram in it, dual channel, for the test, of which it was able to use ~3.2GB. Yes, it ran windows 7 64 bit for the test, and yes the memory controller hardware in the chipset is 32 bit so even with a 64 bit OS there is the ~3.2GB limit for this particular system.

I personally have never ever had a single kingston stick give me a single problem unless I got it used and it was dead when I got it. When working with as many computers as I do, that is incredibly rare, and I can not say that about hardly any other computer parts or brands. It just smegging works. This is why I will only buy kingston ram for my systems, though I have some other ram brands running in a couple of my computers that I have tested with programs like memtest86+ and prime95 for a day, I got that ram cheap or free used. When I buy new, it's always kingston.
Basically, it's always worked first time every time and never miscommunicated its speed to the motherboard (there is a chip on all ram called SPD which communicates the stats of the ram stick to motherboards on boot including ram timings and PC speed also the voltage the ram is sposed to run at)... Ive had serious problems with either reliability or SPD errors or both with every other brand of RAM besides "Simple tech"/micron ram, so I just buy what I know will work so I don't have to worry about it... one less thing to worry about to me.

Lol? I ran a server before on a 1.5 gig VPS with 30 people on, no lag at all. VPS's lag because they are oversold, thus makig harddisk speed epicly slow. You obviously did something wrong with your setup then.
A 1 gig pc would do the job if you dedicated about 400MB to the server, and play on lowest settings :biggrin.gif: Done it on my spare machine before tho it was 7 people 1GB ram and Debian :tongue.gif:
Not all VPS' are oversold.. Cheap ones on budget hosting might be.

That's not true at all. I run a server for me and a couple friends. A total of 3 players and we use 512mb just fine. We could have 2-3 more players on without any issues if I were to use more aggressive garbage collection. Minecraft uses like .25mbit per player so a 2mbit connection would be fine for 4 players and regular browsing.

So I run a computer with about 1GB of ram, and I wanna run a server, for [at MOST] 4-5 people. Also, I wanna play from the same computer.
I use Windows 7. A simple yes/no/why would reallllly help. Thanks!
And, for you, a dimound.
IMO, 1GB is way more than enough for 4....all this talk about RAM speeds and RAM brands I think is quite nit-picky and unnecessary...
With a proper setup, even 768 is more than enough. But on the other hand, if you use Windows, I would say 1GB is 'enough'. On account of the fact that Windows with nothing else on it and running should take no more than 400MB -- and that can support 4 players just fine too.
Ill be the first to push the idea on 'dont skimp on ram', but you certainly dont need 2GB for 4 players, just not necessary.
And as a side note...
i ran a debian squeeze home server for 2 players on 128mb without lagging.
Did you only allocate it (being java/mc) 128MB? or is that the total amount of ram in an actual computer....how old must a computer actually be to be using ram-capacities that low.. Even in my spare-junk stores I cannot find a stick lower than 512 in a reasonable processor generation (cause I dismiss my 64MB sticks as being from a generation that is far too worthless to ever have considered.)

You are forgetting that the client can take 1GB in and of itself, and windows 7 takes a good 512MB at least for itself in common configurations; I have also had my server, with no more than 4 players on it, taking almost 1GB. Add that up - it's much more than 1GB you quote. This person is running win7, a client, and a server for 4 on the same machine. Or did you forget that?
This person needs 2-3GB for all that to be comfortable.

I redact my entire statement. I seemed to have completely glazed over the fact that the client will be run on the same computer as the server. My suggestion was for server-only, and as such, is quite wrong and grossly underestimates the amount of ram necessary. Most of this thread seemed to have gone towards the idea the OP would have a server separate from the client, and I presumptuously made the assumption that was already the case.
No not even close, I have Core i3 350M 7200RPM 500GB HDD 4GB DDR3, and I can play MC, but I get severe lag when hosting a server (3 people)
Server in my closet runs about 8 people for 15 minutes before crash, 5 people with stability specs:
Ubuntu 10.04
512MB ram
7200RPM 160GB HDD [email protected]
lostsoul7171 me and friend made a house in a river valley and would love to stay on the server you did a great job making it if i am accepted it will be my permanent server

Did you assign the server its own core and the client another core?, I had this issue until i assigned core 1 to minecraft client and core 2 to server and core 0 and 4 to other background processes and stuff.
I have a quad core at 3.8 GHz with 4GB of ram and I couldn't host a 3 man server and play at the same time. Your mileage may vary, but running on a separate machine is preferred.
i have a quad caure at 2.6 GHz and 4gb ram and i can hosted 10 people
Something that you might want to do if you still find playing and hosting at the same time very slow is make or increase the size of a pagefile. Pagefiles are sort of "virtual RAM" since they are portions of your hard drive allocated as RAM. Performance of a page file will never be as good as with that same amount of DDR2 or DDR3 RAM, but it helps a lot. I have 4 GB DDR2 and a 10 GB pagefile, and I regularly use 4 GB of it. Not sure about how-to exactly since I use Vista, just Google "make a windows 7 pagefile" or "increase the size of a windows 7 pagefile" and lots of help will come up. Hope I helped.

Neckbeards! Doctor Cichocki does not approve of stupidity and neither do I, stop the spread of damned useless rules!
My windows 7 consumes 1.2 gigs idling at start up!
somethings wrong with your startup list then, because thats.....way more than probably everybody using win7.

About that: Is Kingston a lot better or something? It costs a lot more... -ish
