I want to make my own server but I dont want remote hosting. Does anyone know what you need to buy to have a server? SO far my best guess is search "server" on ebay and buy one of those machines but i would like for an expert to confirm this.
Any computer can be a server, but if you want more than you in it, you will need to get a decent computer. A good processor, and around 6-8gb of ram on win7 should be fine.. I think. Others might know more though.
well if he has windows on his comp already why would he need to concern himself with reOSing or getting a new computer. No need to be so hostile either.

I would say if you Ebayed a server you might end up with something interesting. If you looking to do it at home maybe try and build a system with parts from somewhere link ncix.com. You have to have a decent upload speed so check you upload: http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ The going rate is about 0.25 mb/s per player.
Yeah, there's nothing special to running an MC server. Just install the program on any computer that's not doing something else. :-) I have two instances running on my "server" computer that is really just a pretty basic PC.

Not for a server... why waste money on that piece of **** when you can install any flavor of linux that is actually designed to be ran as a server.
No offense intended to the OP, but someone who doesn't know how to build a server has no business trying to install and mange a Linux system.
What's your upload speed? I'd consider that before spending money on a locally hosted server.

I got 3.82mb for upload and 15.73mb for downlaod is that normal? Logic tells me those numbers should be close to each other but please correct me if otherwise. Also how are those numbers compared to the average?
Personally I use my old computer as server, It has an older athlon x2 in it, and i have added more ram totaling 6gb, overkill for minecraft i know, but i use the computer for other things too, like browsing the internet and playing music, and with both opera and firefox running and both have a lot of webpages up (tabs) AND minecraft server running, memory goes fast.
I could try to set up a manecraft server on my linuxbox server instead, but only if it is more stable under linux. as i seem to have to restart the server at least once a day or else server lag is getting extreme.
i'd suggest you use your current computer as your server, maybe add a bit of ram as it's cheap anyway and buy yourself a new gaming rig.
You won't be able to hold a whole lot of people with that upload so I wouldn't spend too much money on a server build.

My computer has the specs printed in the front and thats what i looked at for the old specs.
It turns out I acutally have a 1.79GHz core not a 2.0 for a server is that still good?
Hey everyone thanks for your help!
After some testing, my 2.0Ghz 1gb RAM pc is capable of managing the type of server i want, small private server.
I also learned that servers DO NOT need video cards, excuse my ignorance but i realized how logical that was only after i ran my server.
Thanks again everyone! :smile.gif:
