Is skype really the reason why when I try to host a server on my computer that it crashes? Is there anyway I can by pass this because I 70% of the time that I am playing minecraft will be on skype and there is no way around that. Has anyone figured out exactly why this happens and what could be done to fix it?
You're going to have to tell me more about your problem.
1. How much RAM do you have?
2. What OS are you using?
3. What does the error say?
well its def not my computer. I have a brand new Alienware M17x.
1. 4gigs
2. windows 7, 64 bit.
3. I don't get a error message, Whenever I host a server and connect on skype my internet shuts off and I have to do ipconfig /renew to get it back on.
When I am not on skype the server runs fine, I don't understand it. Any idea?

Are they using the same port by any chance? (I don't know much about Skype, sorry.)
No I just looked into that and it says it's using 40031 or 80 and 443 as alternatives. I have read somewhere else that Skype could cause problems so I was wondering if someone knew something about that and what could be done about it!
reposting the following from another thread I just posted the same info in.

ok, this sounds very much like you have windows and a realtek network chip on your network card. If neither is true nothing I am about to say applies to you specifically.
Realtek network card drivers for windows have major serious issues serving anything, this has been a non stop headache of mine for about ten years now. Whenever I see a realtek chip in a system that has network issues I do the following steps:
1) go into the card's hardware settings and disable *ALL* offloading functions in the advanced settings dialog box. This is a band-aid that increases cpu usage but allows the card to function somewhat until you have a more permanent solution.
2) replace the card with an old intel 100Mbps card from anywhere - they are all over for $5 used, and I keep a collection about myself. This always solves network issues for me personally, every single time.
As for skype and minecraft - that's horse manure. I am running skype myself along with two servers on a win7 x64 box and I had very serious issues (again) with the onboard realtek network chip causing just exactly the same thing you are complaining of. Drop in an intel card, the problem immediately disappeared. I have used several of my computers for minecraft serving experimenting to see which could run minecraft how well, and on most but not all of the occasions I had skype and minecraft running together, but one thing was constant... when using onboard realtek network I had serious network issues like lag and disconnects and even BSoDs until I disabled the offloading options, then the problems lessened a good amount, and then when I replaced the network card with one of my intel cards ive got the problem instantly disappeared, and did so for good.
