Hello All,
I have a Dell Optiplex that I got at goodwill for like $80 that I use alot for lab sims and stuff while getting different certs. It's definatley dated the important specs = 300gb Hardrive 1GHz Processor and 256mb RAM(LOL) The Ram I can fix buy buying an extra chip at goodwill for $10 bucks or so. But I think it's capped at 512mb RAM. So I tested it out for the first time yesterday I have a KVM switch hooked up so I can swap back and forth between my beastly laptop and my server. My Laptop which is running the client is able to connect perfectly using the servers actual IP Address and not just local host; however when i mine blocks about 75% of the time the block will reappear as if nothing happened. Also I noticed some rubberbanding happening and when I switch to the server it gives the "Did sytem Time Change Can't keep up!" Message. Which from reading alot of posts can be ignored. So what do you guys think? Any official or well informed advice on minimum requirements for server? If worse comes to worse I could go buy a slightly better junk box but It would help to know what range I'm shooting for. Also of not is that I have a good internet connection I usually dowload at 1.5-2 Mega Bytes per second actual download rate. And my upload rate isn't that great though think it's like 50kbps actual upload rate when uploading to sites. Any help is much appreciated thanks. Also first post! I have night mares of the green monster --> and whats worst he's more popular now so I'm starting to see him in other game sites and as avatars lol.

Yah that isn't nearly fast enough to run a Minecraft Server, from what I've seen the server is extremely memory hungry. Notch hasn't put out offical recommended specs, but I'd guess this is pretty accurate.
CPU: 2.4Ghz Single Core CPU (2.2Ghz Dual-Core or Higher Recommended)
Memory: 4GB or Higher Recommended
I also would guess your internet connection doesn't have enough bandwidth, my friend who runs a 20 player server says his server hits upwards of 2.5-3Mbps upload rates when the server is full.
Of course the faster the server they better, it will make things much smoother for anyone connecting to your server.
Hey thanks for the Post. I was hoping the server was light weight. I can always buy a better PC and it wouldn't be that expensive to get one with the specs you listed but the badwidth would be the bigger problem. In the perfect world I would rather have a server with 20+ people but as of now I wanted a server that at least my friends and I can build in. What I think I will do is reverse the order I will have my laptop run the server program and the old dell play the game. If the issue goes away then I can rule out the bandwidth as the bottle neck (For my goal of at least 5 players any way.)

Hey just wanted to provide an update in case anyone else has similar issues. I hosted the server on my laptop and played the client on the laptop just fine at the same time. So I think I can rule out the Bandwidth issue it worked perfectly fine with me and another person on. I bought the game for my Dad and me and him were playing last night with no issues. Tested older Dell Desktop and same issue occured. I hope A Ram update will do the trick like I said most it can be upgraded to is 512 or 1 GB I think. On a side note me and Pops were trying to kill a chicken near the starting beach and it wouldn't die. We ended up trying to bury the chicken under the sand and after numerous attempts we finally got the chicken buried were he couldn't break the sand locks. And then we heard a sickening Bwak! When we dug up the sand he disspeared. Makes me wonder if killing animals in MP is broken.

Ok thanks so setting them on fire and burying them are the only ways as of yet lol. Waring trying to get the chicken to sty in a 2 block deep hole is hard next time I will dig a 4 block ddep hole so i have more time to cover him up

That used to be my old PC, now I play on my i7 Laptop. The case is a Antec Dark Fleet DF-86 Gaming Full Tower
Now you don't need something like I have because I do loads of my work on my PC with testing and modifying. However a few of these items plus the internet and you'll never encounter lag at all.

But if i just want to play with maybe 10-15 ppl? Isn't an core 2 duo with 8GB RAM and an internet connection similar to that one you have?
For 10-15 people a decent laptop with 2-4GB RAM will be enough, no need to get Intel i7's, SSDs, 2TB drives in RAID and such. Cpt Brenner is tripping :biggrin.gif:
Trippin? Ha, that's funny. No, the reason why I have this setup is because I run multiple web servers and hosting a FTP on my computer. So I built this PC from scratch to handle my current needs for schooling and work, its not all fun and games.
As for you man, your current setup will do OK but you really need to look at your IP. I may have a great PC Setup, but a lot of good it is if your on a network that doesn't have a good upload speed. So go to www.speedtest.net/ and check out your upload/download speeds.
For each megabyte of upload is about the equivalency of 2-4 players playing with minimal lag (depends on the High Network Traffic in your area). Most ISP's have been kicking down Upload speeds due to the fact that they cost extra for the company to maintain.
Internal S3 graphics VIA Chrome9 HC IGP (no idea what that is)
This is the problem, its the gpu and it doesn't support opengl. I don't think a driver update will help either, better off getting a new pc probably...
I've seen a lot of discussion about server requirements the past few days now so i felt i should chime in as well.
I expect to see some "lol"s and "hahaha"s at my current mc server, but oh well.
i am currently running my server on:
-an old pentium 4 (2.93 GHz)
-with 512 ddr (pc3200) with 256 MB dedicated to the server. On idle, with no one logged in it only uses about 58 MB ram. when both my brother and i are logged on, i have never seen the ram go above 125 MB.
-an overkill gigabit switch (we play over lan)
-7200rpm sataII hdd plugged into a sataI mobo port
the only time we've ever taxed the cpu was when the chicken farm reached 175+ chickens flapping for their stupid lives. (with no other programs running) the ram really wasnt effected
My only guess as to why the computer survives is that perhaps the server is optimized for your hardware. but i could be wrong, as i doubt its not that sophisticated of a program for its size.
it seems to be working just fine for two users, but if you were to have 10-15 players, i would recommend a "newer" dual core or higher. i wouldn't worry about having 16 gigs of ram, thats probably overkill.
i hope this helps. if any one has an explanation as to why my system works for me and why others strugle with much better hardware let me know, thanks
btw, i am gunna upgrade eventually so i can run a vnc server and a ventrilo server with my minecraft server.
Holy ****** my pc is god enough but I can never ever reach that high bandwith, I even got a static IP adress and now all my hope got ****ed. I will force my parents to take a better internet provider. *mad*
I should point out that I ran a 5 person server on like 0.2Megabit/s upload. the only people who lagged were the two brothers who were playing on an even worse internet connection (and it wasn't that bad for them). Oh and we were skyping at the same time.
The JVM should run MC on like 512MB of RAM but it will eat anything you give it making benchmarking rather difficult.

"Terminator like robots may one day rule the world, as long as they don't run Windows Vista"
I'm on a fairly crappy little desktop with 4gb RAM and upload of around 512Kbps, will I be able to run a server for five people, just a normal building world?
According to the website posted earlier in the thread (http://canihostaminecraftserver.com/), the maximum number of people you could host is 3 due to your upload speed.

Pretty much any CPU made for LGA1366 will be good enough.
Vidya card, hard drive, etc. don't matter.
