Ok, i have windows 7 x64 with 4 gigs of ram and a Pentium Dualcore e2200 @ 2.20 ghz, When i run a server the server with even with no one in it useses 50% cpu and when i try to play the game and host on the same computer (i've done it fine with other games that are a-lot more graphic intense) i get very bad lagg I have a 8800 gtx 768 mb. Why is the server using so much cpu usage? I mean i can host a san andreas multiplayer server and play the game at the same time with no lagg at all. I tried putting it on another computer but everytime someone would connect it would get to "Logging in" then the computer would loose internet then i would have to unplug the ethernet cord to get it online again, That computer is a Pentium 4 H/T @ 3.6 ghz it has windows xp Pro. So i basiclly either have to deal with the lag or not host at all. I mean for a game that dosen't have much to it, It sure it a resource hog. Also after awhile of playing the game uses almost 2 gigs of ram (in task manager). There must be a way to fix this it is kinda annoying. I was planning on buying the game but if it's gonna do this i don't plan on buying anything.

Which Server Software?
How old is the computer?
Hard drive space/Virtual RAM?
Internet Connection speed?
To me it sounds like a graphics card, or your computer is flooded with hackers/malware/viruses....ect.
Free Anti Virus Software(s):
-AVG (a scanner)
-Avast
-AntiVira
-SpyBot
-More... use google.
It's not my computer, It's the server alone that's eating all the cpu usage, When the server isn't running my computer is just fine. My computer is only like a year old. I've got 1 tb (1000 gb) of hardrive 4094 mb of Virtual ram and 4 gigs of Ram. My internet connection speed is 10 mb download and 2 mb upload. I am running the latest server with the latest client. I am not even coming close to using all my bandwith. When the server has been on for 2 hours or so it starts hoggin my cpu, It's gotten so bad that when the server is at idle it's still using 70% cpu, It shows me in taskmanger
Java is **** and the server will take up a ton of CPU even when nothing is happening. If you are hosting a creative mode server, I'd suggest looking into custom software.

Try:
Alt+Ctrl+Del>Processes Tab
Find/Select the minecraft instance>right click>Set Priority
Change the priority lower.
Didn't do anything, Cpu usage is still high as it's always been, I've tried single core and dual core, Same thing
Not trying to knock your computer, but honestly, your CPU is a low-end bargain chip. You have a relatively slow front side bus speed, and very little cache. The architecture of your CPU is not designed for server type applications. I would spend ~100 bucks and upgrade your CPU to whatever the best you can afford that will fit in your MB. Even a 70 dollar e7300 would be better than what you have. I can run minecraft on that cpu with ~25% cpu load with 6-8 people on the server.
And none of that actually matters in this case, pixelscience. CPUs designed for server oriented work are merely optimized for such high-demand, high-reliability environments. A regular desktop CPU is still very usable for running servers outside of such an environment. Minecraft may be RAM intensive, but it certainly does not qualify as 'high end server software'. What you are spouting sounds like it comes from a gross misunderstanding and lack of actual knowledge of what you are talking about. (I work on high end game server software for a living).
Assuming this is Alpha server you are trying to run... There is definitely something else going on here. Make sure your Java is up to date, at least. If it's custom server then that could be the issue right there. 50% means it's maxing a single core of your dual core. Try running it with nogui, and make sure you are giving it at least 256M:
I have not tried running the server on Windows, but on my 2ghz Xeon quad-core Linux box it rarely goes above 5% (of a single core) even with 2 people on. An E2200 shouldn't see much different than that under low loads.

Sorry to bum this as I'm in the need of help and don't wish to waste the space by creating a new thread, but I have the same problem. As you see in the quote above, I don't think an upgrade is necessary. As I've been playing since late September / Late October, and I'm recently having this problem. If only notch were here... I would yell at hime for coding a game in such a poor language...

Yeh, I don't see what the problem is?
The new 1.4 update will consume your whole CPU core as soon as you add players too.

You guys are all scrubs.Think of it like a Tree. You plant the sapling on glowstone, and you immediatly try to hop on it and ride it like a pig. Without the Saddle.
Yeah My server makes the computers CPU go from 20% to 100% so it is really crap. I need a way to fix this because my server is also lagging and people are starting to not come on my server
