What causes this? That is one of the reasons I made my own server, the "timed out" error would hit me on a server id spent weeks on, not allowing me to log in for days to weeks, sometimes forever.
However, the advice I gave was situation-specific, and other 'lost connection: Disconnected' messages could also mean the player timed out whilst connecting, clicked Cancel whilst connecting or has an invalid/expired session ID, not just that the account is not paid for.
@stupid3700, you seem to know your way around well enough.
I noticed this message in my server log tonight. It referenced a player name I'm not familiar with and which I most certainly did not whitelist. Additionally I've only ever released the server connection info to people I trust. So I'm guessing this is just someone scanning for servers somehow.
When you see this error, is there any risk of an unknown player successfully connecting to a legitimate, vanilla, whitelisted server properly running in online mode? And is there some known method out there that facilitates script kiddies scanning for servers and attempting to connect?
Here is the only two log entries out of the ordinary:
5.12 23:23:59 [Server] User Authenticator #22/INFO UUID of player Natsuexplosion11 is 7c49ecfb-0be6-46e4-af14-47382144d711
25.12 23:23:58 [Disconnect] User com.mojang.authlib.GameProfile@3c2dca96[id=<null>,name=Natsuexplosion11,properties={},legacy=false] (/104.172.48.87:51517) has disconnected, reason: Disconnected
The username appears to be valid as per your API tool reference, and the IP traces to somewhere in Europe from the US server :|

If the server is running in online mode, then only those who have bought the game and have a valid session ID can join. If it's whitelisted and in online mode, then only those who have bought the game, have a valid session ID and are on your whitelist can join.
In future, I would ask you to create your own topic if requesting support, in order to prevent thread hijacking.

You can use the API to check to see if the username exists:
