Me and my brother are on the same internet connection and I decided to open up my world to him. Whenever he goes to the multiplayer list, though, it simply says "Scanning for LAN servers" infinitely and never allows him to see my server. Is it because we're on a wireless connection? We both have legitimate accounts so that can't be the issue
Edit: Yes, I tried giving him the IP given to me. He still couldnt connect
I'm glad I'm not the only one with this issue. I don't see how I'm doing anything wrong: I clicked open to LAN and tried to connect one legit account to another so I could play with someone. Very disappointing, this feature was promised on the wiki!

I'm beginning to think that a wireless connection may be the issue......You may need a cable.
whats your ip adress i can join and help u out dude
It's LAN connection. You can't connect to me unless I'm on the same connection as you. You're thinking of a normal server, which works just fine for me. It's just when I try to host the new LAN servers.
Just checked mine. I don't have it. That must have been the snapshot only. The server files may be mixed with the client files for LAN.

Make sure you let it through in the firewall. When starting a LAN server for the first time you should've gotten a prompt asking something about the firewall.
Minecraft has been in my firewall for a long time, and I never got a prompt, so I assume it's through.
6crazy, that's your local IP. Only people on the same internet connection can connect to your local IP. LAN stands for Local Area Network. If you wanna connect with people that aren't on your connection, you still need to portforward and host a server and all that.

awe man well I QUIT srry i couldnt help dude catch ya 'round bro!
I'm wondering why nobody (besides Collin) Who knows what they're talking about has chimed in to help. It seems to be a problem affecting a great deal of people.
It is probably because you are using wireless internet. I don't have it, so when I opened the world my siblings could play with me.
I am not sure though, so don't take this as 100% correct.

I've been thinking it may be the problem as well. Maybe we'll get an announcement from Mojang or something confirming or denying this
pppgggr, when you host a server with the lan button, take note of the IP address and the PORT! I've noticed on my computer that the port is NOT 25565 and multiplayer "searching for lan" looks for 25565. The reason your friend may not be able to connect is also because of how Multiplayer works, if you don't put a port it will assume 25565. So see and experiment.
I've hosted a normal server before on ports other than 25565. I know very well to take note of the port
I was just having this issue but when i opened to LAN i noticed it gave me my ip address( which i already knew) but it gave me a port of like 3114 then i tried to direct connect to my ip and i put the :3114 at the end...It worked! I am not on wifi by the way both of my computers are plugged into a single router. For those of you thinking its wifi though i would imagine that unless your home network was set up extremely weird or wrong that wifi is not your problem. minecraft doesn't even know what type of network connection you have. All it looks at is ip addresses so as long as the two computers are on the same subnet it shouldn't matter the method they are connected. If you want to test to see if your computers can communicate you can run a simple test.
1: open up run line (windows key + R)
2: type "cmd" enter
3: type "ipconfig" enter
4: find your "ipv4 address" (it should be something like 192.168.1.67)
5: go to your second computer and repeat first two steps
6: type "ping (the ip from the first computer)" and hit enter.
If you get a message like this:
Reply from 192.168.1.67: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.1.67: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
then the two computers can communicate and the problem is with minecraft
but if you get a message like this
Reply from 192.168.1.67: Destination host unreachable.

or this:
Ping request could not find host 192.168.1.369. Please check the name and try again.
then the problem is with your two computer not communicating properly and it is not minecraft's fault
If you do get this i am sorry because i have no instructions for you on how to fix it because it could be one of many many things(probably simple things though). It would be best in that case to have a nerdy friend try to figure it out.
It worked for me to connect to a laptop. I don't know what to tell you. (P.S - If you only have one account, you cant log in on that same account on two separate computers. Each player has to have their own paid account.)

Yeah....PCs arent connecting properly. Thanks for the help, though. I know what to look for.

There is a server folder there, but I think it doesnt run until you hit "Open to LAN"
