I am looking to create a Modded Forge Minecraft server that my son and I can use on the local network in our home. There will be no outside users or anyone else logging into the server, but we will have 15 or so mods installed on it. I was going to spin up a VM on one of my home VMWare servers that only has minimal usage right now: The specs of the server are:
Dual Xeon E5450 Quad Core 3.0 GHZ Processors - older yes, but the system is really only being used for two AD File / DHCP / DNS Servers. Of the 8 Procs, there are 5 or 6 available to give to the Minecraft Server.
16 GB Memory - wasnt sure how much to devote to the Minecraft server. I have about 10 GB available.
Disk Space - not sure how much to allocate, but I have plenty of it
OS - Thinking CentOS or Debian, but not super LInux savvy so would need the GUI. With the GUI also running, would I be still be using considerably less resources than if I had a Windows OS running?
Other option from looking around at Parts I have is to install Dual Xeon Quad Cores (at about 2.33 GHZ) with 16 GB RAM plus whatever disk space and OS I install in a dedicated Minecraft Only Server....
Minecraft forge for 2 players and ~15 mods is not a big resources consumer, you should be fine with 2gb of RAM and a couple of CPU cores. If you are confortable with windows, then assign about 1gb of RAM extra for the OS/System processes. So 3gb of should be more than enough for you guys! Probably 50GB of disk space would do it if not less than that.
Would it run OK on a dedicated Server with 2 Dual Core Xeon 5345's (running at 2.33 GHZ), 16 GB Memory in the box?
I have this lying around and really wanted to setup a dedicated server for this as my VMWare Host gets used mainly for AD on my home 2012 AD and my Retro PC 2003 AD Networks....

Sorry for delay in posting any replies to this...
I am ready to setup my server, but curious what OS would be recommended to host the server?
