A tech reseller in my area has a Dell T310 server (4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, Ubuntu 16.10) available for $150. Would this work well as a MC server? I have a spare 240GB SSD I'd throw in there to run off of & designate the included HDD as storage. Is the 4GB enough RAM? I searched online & it'd cost about $100 to $150 more to bump it up to 8GB. Any advice appreciated!
The processor is a Xeon quad-core 2.4ghz. It's used, but refurbished & tested, new HDD & fresh install of Ubuntu 16.10.
Hadn't thought about the internet connection requirements. We have the highest tier residential Xfinity (Comcast) service - allegedly up to 200Mbps down, conspicuously unspecified (& generally unimpressive) up speeds. I'm really only setting up a server so my niece & nephew and I can play together, so not a heavy user load, but probably lots of mods running. What sort of speeds do I need for this?
According to the specs on Dell's website the Xeon processor in the T310s is the E3-1220 v5, but that configuration is only listed with 8GB and up of RAM. Their stock 4GB RAM model has a Celeron G3900. I'll verify the Xeon model with the seller - I'm assuming he lowered the RAM during the refurb. If it is the E3-1220 v5 is that acceptable, or is that even older than the 3400 series?
I asked the guy to verify the processor model and it's a Xeon x3430 2.4ghz quad core, so I guess it is one of the 3400 series you mentioned - that means it's not as good as I originally thought, but still sufficient for my needs, right? Or does the 3400 series have issues that'd make this not a great idea?
Edit: Oops, just re-read your earlier post saying the 3400 series was older but should be okay. Thanks for all your help.
