Hi, I was just setting up a new small server to hopefully fit about 10 players maximum, and everything was going smoothly. However, once I started the server, we got a ton of "Can't keep up" messages. The server was using most of the allocated ram, so I changed that to 1GB and everything seemed fine on the ram side. However, this did not fix the problem as all actions on the server were severely delayed, many ms behind. I went into the "performance" tab in task manager and saw that the CPU usage was at a consistent 100%. Further testing revealed that it was only at 100% when people were on the server. As soon as everyone had left the server, the CPU went back down to about 50%, where it looks like it usually stays. One last note, when I created the batch to allocate more ram, I also disabled the server GUI in case that was causing any unnecessary CPU usage.
In short, is 2 GHz not enough CPU speed to run a vanilla minecraft server?
Thanks for the help!
System specs: Computer is a Dell Precision 490

Thanks for the support! I'm working on the steps on your forum post to set it up via linux, but I'm getting stuck on booting from the USB. I changed the boot priority to USB first and even got to the screen where you can tell it to boot from it, and it says it is unable to boot. I did exactly what the instructions said, and Rufus made sure the USB had nothing on it except for the msi file. One thing I did notice, when I first went to the mineOS website, I downloaded the current version. However, Rufus didn't like that and said it would have to access the internet and download additional necessary files. Is this normal? Because to fix it I just downloaded the older version, and now I'm wondering if that's why the computer won't boot from it. Thanks again for the help!
You need to make sure that the dropdown box that says "FreeDOS" is changed to ISO Image.
That's probably the problem.
I'll update the guide now, there's always something I forget in tutorials XD
Try it again with that setting changed, and if it doesn't work, then I'll look up your motherboard's BIOS and see if there's any settings in there for it
Yep still no luck trying both versions while selecting "ISO Image". The exact words of the BIOS are "Selected boot device not available- strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility". I don't really know a ton about the BIOS, but when I enter it says "Dell System Workstation 490" at the top. Once again, I REALLY appreciate your support on this issue!
I definitely hear you there, I've been monitoring the CPU and RAM usage while the server is running and RAM seems fine when 1GB is allocated. I also have plenty of room with RAM because I re-seated the sticks and it gave me 4 extra GB of RAM that it wasn't detecting (it's still only saying 6GB when there's 10 in there). I may just go pick up a new 3.3 GHz CPU with how complicated this is getting with Linux. It would be nice to not have to spend extra money on this computer but I would also like it to run a couple programs in the background and not be killing itself just trying to run a small MC server. Thanks for the help, now I just need to figure out the deal with switching CPUs. I have an Intel Xeon 5130 @2.00 GHz and I am currently looking at one of the Core i5 models around 3 to 3.3 GHz, anyone here know if that will work?
Ghz doesn't determine how "good" a processor is it's determined by different things.
It's the main determining factor. Cache, cores, and hyperthreading are also big, but in this case, MC only uses one core, so speed is the biggest determiner.
And MrSentry, well that's interesting then.
So, to be clear, after burning the image to your USB stick, you plugged it into the server computer, started it up (or restarted it), hit whatever key it is for your MOBO (motherboard) to select the boot device, and then selected the USB?
Sounds like, from that error, that it isn't recognizing the USB.
Make sure it's a USB 2.0 stick plugging into a USB 2.0 port.
Try reformatting the USB to Fat32 or NTFS (in rufus, it is the "File System" dropdown.
Or, try another USB stick entirely.
If that doesn't work, theennnnnnnnn...
Try burning it to a CD (if you don't have: a re writable DVD/CD, a dvd writer in your pc, and a cd/dvd reader in your server pc, then don't bother with this)
Pop the CD into your PC's cd drive (your pc, not the server pc)
Give it a bit to rev up and read the disc (should show up in win explorer)
Right click the MineOS ISO file, click "Burn Disc Image" (I don't have the iso on hand and don't want to redownload it, so pretend that my Ubuntu ISO is the mineos one :P)
A window should pop up. Make sure that your correct disc burner (dvd drive) is selected (if you have more than one), tick the box "Verify disc after burning", and then click burn
It may take a while (because DVD's are 20 year old technology), but once it's done, pop it into the dvd drive of the server pc, boot it up (or reboot), and follow the same procedure for the USB, except select the DVD drive (may be named something weird, but it should say "disc, cd, dvd" in there somewhere)

Depending on your player amount, having 2-3gb ram allocated (if you can) would help more.
But CPU-wise, 2ghz is a bit low. However, run a small server on my old PC, and it's a dual core 2ghz, with 2gb (total, sadly) ram.
And it runs fine, buuuutttttttt....
It's running a very, very lightweight linux distro, MineOS. Windows is a ridiculous resource hog, and a dual core 2ghz with 2gb ram isn't going to cut it with Win7.
So, on Windows, you're going to have issues running a server on that CPU.

just to answer the question it would be good to have at least 2.5GHz but Ram also plays apart as said above
