This is an aerial view of my spawn city. It's not terrible, in my opinion, but I feel like it's missing SOMETHING, and I'm not sure what it could be.
What could I do to make it more appealing to new players so that they will stay on my server?
(If you want to see it in person, I should have a link to the server forums in my signature, from which you can get the IP. I won't be on for about an hour or so at least though, I'm about to go jogging.)

I'm not sure if this applies or not in this situation since I can't determine how big your spawn is; but personally I hate massive spawns. I tend to get lost and confused in them and just end up giving up and quitting. I'm not sure if others feel this way as well.

Make sure your spawn has a "theme", Seeing how everything looks modern/futuristic it seems your going good at that part.
Also make sure you have things that your competetor servers dont. Its not good to have a huge city at spawn, but a fair sized village/town/city is ok so you can have your PvP Arena, Mall, Ect.
Actually, this gives me another good idea: As the reward for my first big survival game (we've been looking to try something akin to the Survival Games), the prize will be ownership of a big mall plot (or, well, whatever they wanted to put in the plot, really)!
Actually, tbh, I wasn't really going for a futuristic or modern look... most of this was built by individual players, although pretty much everything on the right side of the picture was built by the same organization. All of the weaponry on the server is pretty old by modern standards (the rifles we use are intended to look roughly civil war era and I don't ever plan on designing any guns that go beyond World War I technology)... on the other hand, most of the lore put forth by the original admin (Griskard) suggests a futuristic, post-apocalyptic theme (hence the name "Aftermath"). The time period is really what the players make of it.
(Also, if anyone who hasn't responded yet is wondering how everything is so colorful, it's because we have Spoutplugin. The blocks are specifically from PaintedStone. I highly recommend that anyone who owns a server use it.)

It is a common misconception that having a large and/or ornate spawn point is at all indicative of having a good/bad server. I made this mistake with the spawn on my server. My spawn in a giant tree, basically. with houses and stuff built into the inside. At 65 blocks tall, it's pretty massive and people have complained that it is a pain to get out of. I had to put a 'scenic way out' and a 'fast way out'.
In reality, people don't care about your spawn point unless it's getting in their way. Mostly, players will have a bed in their house by the end of the 2nd day if they know what they're doing anyways.
I'm not suggesting that you delete your structures, but in the future simple and elegant is a better solution than large and ornate. My next spawn will be very small and minimal.

As always my children, stay away from drugs, open flame, and normal people. They will all ruin your life.
The primary purpose of spawn is to be a safe place to live for players who haven't decided what town they want to live in (or don't want to live in a town), and a centralized place to easily do business. And sure, there's nothing stopping players from making their own farms if they feel that the public farm isn't big enough (or if people keep not replanting it or something). Although food shouldn't be much of an issue for new players, given the Baconizer...
It's really not very hard to get out of, either, you just walk out the front door of the hospital (iron building with the big blue glowstone ball) and go in pretty much any direction you feel like (I would suggest forward into the mountains, or following the coastline to the left of spawn.)
