It shouldn't matter as he would be the only one on that system, and not shared by several other servers. I would run it on my PC if I didn't have a dedicated server or shared hosting with another company.
Exactly, if all depends I recoemdn Linux to Debian or Centos.
Lean how to work with comands in order to save resorces because you will not use a GUI.
Also I recomend a virtual machine because its more easy to test things, once you have experince if you want you can change your virtual pc to your main pc or imac
I honestly would not recommend hosting a server on your own computer.
The fact that you are worried about safety makes it seem like you want to make a public server that is up 24/7, not just a quick server for you and a few friends to play on.
If that's the case, an actual host would be recommended.
I'm not saying that it's impossible to host a 24/7 server on your own computer, but why even try? It's doubtful that your computer would be able to keep up with a Minecraft server unless it's a decent computer. Also, your internet connection definitely comes into play. Don't forget that.

I think you guys are taking this a bit too far. The op never once said anything about running a public or 24/7 server. Running a server isn't as dangerous as people make it out to be, if somebody really wanted to hack you, they could find a way even without the server. Pick whichever computer has the better specs, and then you are fine with leaving on when you want the server online.
well i have coolermaster computer
intel core 2cpu 6600 @ 2.40 ghz 2.40 ghz .... 16 gm ram and 1000gb memory
my upload speed is 25 mbps
and my download speed is 50 mbps
Your Internet is defiantly up to it! As for the computer:
Both I think are about the same (correct me if I'm wrong).
If you are going to install linux, you should use the PC, as it is easier. If not, use the Mac, because:
-Mac OS X is based on UNIX, which is very similar to Linux, so all the terminal commands etc. are usually the same.
-Macs just work better!

I wouldn't worry about it if it is just a server with a bunch of friends playing on it.
