I have set up a private vanilla server for my children and family, but I am not sure how to mod it with SMP mods. I have modded out SSP before (with Risugami's mods, TMI, Mo'Creatrures, Millenaire) so I have a good grasp at how to do it.
The question is - how do you mod the minecraft_server.exe? I cannot drop in through WinRAR any mods. If I get the .jar version, how do I use a console to op the server side? Once I do get a mod installed server side, do I also have to mod client side? I want to get a hand at this before I jump into a bukkit server set up.
There are plenty of videos and tutorials for either bukkit or vanilla server (no mods) - but this is one area that seems lacking information. Can anyone give a guy a hand?
If you want to use the stuff thats already out there, download Bukkit and then check http://plugins.bukkit.org
All you really do is add the .jar file(s) to the /plugins directory and restart the server instance. Once you do that any needed folders for the mods are created, you can tweak the config files in there and re-restart the server for them to take effect.
As far as server console goes...starting the exe on a windows server will open the console window. Same w/ linux but its best to start the server in a 'screen' and then conenct to that screen to run commands, and CTRL-A, D to get back to main server console.
Yes, as said above, BUKKIT!! The vanilla server can not be modded, so i do reccomend bukkit. Also, the BukkitGUI project would be best if you want the server simplified.
All I want is a simple set-up and easy administrations, and able to mod the server with SMP mods like Trees++, TMI, Tropicraft, Mo'creatures (or some other mob mod), railcraft, Nether ores, and Jammy's furniture. Can the bukkit solution be modded? or is it just plug-ins?
He wants MODS not PLUGINS (which he made very clear in the OP). The installation is more or less the same.
For RailCraft:
1. Use WinRAR to open the vanilla server jar (download the server JAR from minecraft.net/download.jsp, put it in its own folder so it doesn't clutter up your downloads folder with all the stuff it will create).
2. Drag in the contents of the Minecraft Forge SERVER zip.
3. Close WinRAR and run the server.
4. In the window that appears type "stop" (in the text box at the bottom of the screen).
5. In the folder that has the server jar there should now be a lot of files and folders. There should be a "mods" folder, place the railcraft.zip in this folder.
6. Run the server, anyone using RailCraft will be able to connect to it (note if you have changed the block/item IDs of RailCraft on the SSP client you must do the same for the server).
Most mods are more or less the same (providing they use Minecraft Forge).
