Use the dot.tk service.
It's free and useful for making a custom server that you don't want a monthly contract attached to.
If you are wanting to host a reliable server with something easy to remember I would suggest just registering a domain name that can be memorized easily and is used with preferably .net. Example is mine Ironspire.net, easy to memorize and not too long and complicated. You can later connect your bought domain with your server!
I use 1and1.com as my server provider, and as you can tell from the info in m sig, I use it for my MC server and website.
If you went with a dedicated server, a domain name came with it. If a domain name did not come with the original purchase then shell up the extra few dollars for one. It will be much less of a hassle to deal with. Once you have one, you will need an HTTP provider to resolve your domain name. I suggest using apache as it's easy to use and maintain.
Once you have all that set up, you can in truth use any sub domain you want with the server. In truth, you connect to me server you can use <Any Text Here>.anthracitecity.com or even just anthracitecity.com. This is because the server by default takes control of all domains and subdomains due to the port you set for it.
If you have any additional questions let me know. or send me a PM. (I host my server using debian (squeeze) or Linux) so I do all my stuff from the console via SSH and FTP).
To configure this you'll need to set it up with your hosting provider's control panel. There are many versions of this but cPanel is fairly common, first create a sub-domain xxx.domain.com then configure the DNS records. Here is the documentation for setting advanced DNS records in cPanel.
Sometimes this can take up to 12-24 hours to take effect but you can test domain/sub-domain forwarding after you've configured:
1. Press and hold WINDOWS KEY then press R to bring up your Run Window
2. Type CMD and press <ENTER>
3. Black window (command prompt) should appear
4. Type PING MC.ADDRESS.COM .. replace MC.ADDRESS.COM with your domain or subdomain and press <ENTER>
5. You should see a ping reply with your server address (example: 5.55.55.555), if you don't it isn't configured properly or you might need to wait for DNS records to propagate with your ISP (Internet Service Provider) .. 12-24 hours max, usually faster. Rebooting might help too. You can also check the settings by using IPTools.com, they tend to update a little quicker than some ISPs.
OR depending on who you have for a hosting provider you might be able to call them and have them set it up for you over the phone, this would be ideal if any of this looks scary.
My server is greenbay.gbunetwork.com, if you ping this you should get 69.162.116.98
The nice thing about domain/sub-domain forwarding is if you ever switch hosting providers or if your IP address ever needs to change for any reason you can just update the forwarding so your users can always use the same 'domain' address.
i have done that and it still wont let me connect it says "connection timed out: connect"
