I'm looking for suggestions of what to read/programs that will help me learn Java.
Books I've found at the library so far:
Java All-In-One Desk Reference for Dummies
Java Game Programming For Dummies
Javascript for Dummies, 4th Edition.
Linux For Dummies, 6th Edition
SQL for Dummies, 5th Edition
SUSE Linux 10 for Dummies
SUSE Linux 9.3 For Dummies
Seeing a pattern!? lol. Any thoughts, comments, tips, or whatnot would be super duper :tongue.gif:
Its not really necessary I know almost zero java and run my server just well. Maybe take a computer science class if your not to busy. The for dummies books seem to be horrible.
I couldn't write a single line of BASIC if you put a gun to my mother's head and told me to do it, and yet I manage to run a very successful and stable server with a happy and satisfied user base. It's more about the art of proper administration than it is about raw technical skills. (Although some technical skills are definitely necessary).
I think he knows now that you do need experience with java (or coding in general) to run a server successfully. Just follow the instructions of whatever plugins you install and you should be fine. You only need to learn the language if you want to develop something
I currently run a Multiplay server, but I'm getting frustrated because I have to submit a ticket to get a mod not on the list, or to get it updated, and I hate all the waiting. I've run a server from my computer, and I think I understand it, at least well enough to get it going. I would like to pay for a server, with enough yummy specs for my 15 players to play without problems. I'd like it to be up all the time.
I don't understand how a VPS works, do I have access to the folders/JAR like I did on my computer? Can I set it and it'll keep trucking until I need to change something, reboot, whichever?
Maybe what I am imagining in my head is worse than what I need to know. I've read all the stuff I can find on running a server, but either I'm missing what I'm looking for, or I'm looking for it wrong.

Either way Thank you for responding and the help!
you should have access to the folders (either via SSH or FTP). it should keep going 24/7 unless you stop it yourself (or it crashes)
SSH is kinda like log me in? Where I can access the "computer" and add, remove, and edit files? I'm considering going with Almighty Servers, they are kind enough to give me a test server to see if I can do it. I guess I just need to jump in and get my feet wet lol.
SSH = remote terminal or command prompt
Ftp = renaming, moving, uploading, downloading files.
Makes it like a folder on your computer! :smile.gif:
If you have skype i can show you how everything works.
From SSH to yaml.

but if you really want to learn, here is a good book (i've used their books for c and c#):
