I run a server for 5 of my friends on hardware that's **** poor by today's standards. You'll be fine. A bit of advice: ignore complaints by the Minecraft server that it's not able to keep up or there's not enough RAM given to the server. As long as when you log in there's no lag and your save files work great, what's the problem?
On my server I have 512MB RAM and my startup script is somewhere near Xms250M Xmx480M. I bet if you used Xms1024M and Xmx1024M with yours, you'd still have the other GB for Windows and your Minecraft game client.
That being said, I've had better luck running Minecraft servers on old disused hardware that can dedicate itself to the task vs. running it on the same PC as I'm playing on. So, if you have an old computer lying around, put Ubuntu on it and go. Or give that MineOS a try.
It's easy to set up and run just make sure the server properties are how you want them to be.
level-name=world
hellworld=false
spawn-monsters=true (you can change these if you don't want monsters or animals)
online-mode=true
spawn-animals=true
max-players=3 (I would put 3 just in case you would like another mate to join)
server-ip= (IPv4 goes here)
pvp=false (Want to fight each other? Put it to true XD)
server-port=25565 (default is 25565, just forward your ports with your ip which you can find out by going to cmd and type ipconfig, look for IPv4: 192.168.X.X)
Vista
2 Gig RAM
Down and up are like 20 Mbps each. I forget and can't check now.
I know it doesn't sound too good, but would it run 2 people by any stretch?
Thanks.

Dont quote me on that I'm not sure but a 500-700kbs upload speed should be well over enough.
