We're running a 20 person server and have had insane issues with every host we've tried.
At this point, we need to find a good co-location deal and put a 4U rack in.
I'm assuming we will need 10mbps down and 1-2mbps up?
We will build the server.
So far I found a decent co-location center with 10mbps duplex, but don't think that's necessary. It's 88$ a month which seems a bit high.
Also, I can get 8mbps down and 1mbps up at home through my cable company. But I'm worried that home connections don't have the same latency as data centers.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what options I can explore?
Honestly $88 /mo for a colo doesn't sound that bad to me. you may be better off to rent a dedicated server from a high end company like Softlayer or Gigenet if your having that much trouble. I'm surprised you've had trouble with just 20 players, you should be able to run that many on a vps with no issues. Good luck with your search!

We're running a VPS but have no actual control over the server files and plugins. We have to put in support tickets and generally deal with nonsense. It's a control thing. We go down for 5 days every time notch updates because they want to run the server on an older client.
You might be right about the dedicated server. It could be cheaper.
What location for colo do you want? I'm not sure why you wouldn't have access to the files if you get an actual VPS.

What kind of VPS should I look at? For some reason every VPS fails to list their down/up speed. I think alot are meant for web hosting.
You can ask what their port speed is before buying. Also ask if they host minecraft servers. You'll want an umanaged vps, You'll get root access and you can just do what you like. (Just an fyi we offer root access but I'm assuming you've already checked out our site.)

Your servers seem interesting. Why does it list that mods are required? If there is full SSH access couldn't we run the vanilla client, or anything for that manner?

Could you show me where it says mods are required? That would be a mistake. Yes, just as long as it's minecraft related though.
For a colo that is a great price. Most of the time you are better off going for a dedicated server for around 100$ a month and getting good specs plus support of them rebooting and replacing hardware.
If i can find the 2 places I am looking at getting servers from i will update you.
Minerdave does pretty good hosting optimized for Minecraft hosting, at least from what I've seen. As far as VPS hosting goes, you have a lot of choices. I do suggest you contact the host before ordering and ask them if heavy IO usage is ok and how they handle CPU.

I'll add Clinton runs a tight ship also. Obviously I haven't used his services but if you search the forums his company has a great rep here. If you can find a managed dedicated server at a good price than that would definitely get the job done. I still think you would be fine on a decent vps though.

Maybe I should look into VPS? What size VPS is reccommended?
