I just installed MineOS inside Virtualbox, and it looks pretty neat. (I did notice it didn't seem to want to update the server when I clicked the update server button while running IE... it just said "error on page" on the bottom left of the screen. I had to open it in Firefox to get it to work).
Anyway, I have been looking around for a while and haven't been able to find out how to accomplish this task: Changing the IP Address for the Virtual machine? It is set to automatically get one, but I would like to set a static one. I tried entering:
ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.211 netmask 255.255.255.0 up

Aha! Ty, forgot about that, lol... (I'm new to linux, have been messing around with it a bit the last week or two)
I will admit that I know little about setting up this program, but i did successfully install MineOS following your youtube guides. I have it running on my server pc connected to my home router.
1) How can i use the command "online-mode=false"- for those of us who have friends/family who aren't 'paid' minecraft members. I tried to add it in the webUI but it doesn't seem to have changed access.
2) How in the world can i find the external IP that other users can connect to? is it my static external as seen by myip w/ port 25565?
3) The address that others need to connect to the server would be your static IP + port correct? i.e. the IP you see when you use myip.com ?
Many thanks in advance... I'm crossing my fingers to get the online-mode false parameters to work !

Ok, I seem to have run into another problem... when I click "Update server files" it comes up with:
executing command: cgi-bin/server.cgi?command=update&world=one&memory=1024&port=&max_players=&mod=pure
{'world': 'one', 'memory': '1024', 'command': 'update', 'mod': 'pure'} could not download file: minecraft_server.jar
could not download file: craftbukkit-0.0.1-SNAPSHOT.jar
could not download file: c10t-1.5-linux-x86.tar.gz
extracting c10t files... update complete.
Any ideas?
One thing that comes to mind is maybe a program is blocking it... does anybody know what the direct download links the server is trying to pull the files down from are? That way I could go there and see if a program is blocking them (same issue as what happened for my Minecraft client, so am wondering if that fixes it). Nevermind, found them. Still looking for a solution to this problem
No problem.
I have a feeling you did not set up the network correctly when you made your virtual OS. Did you select bridged mode? If not go back and click on the settings for the OS and change them to "bridged adapter" under network.

Anyone have any answers to this?
1. To use the command online-mode=false will work, but whenever someone connects it gives them the name "player" because it thinks you are playing offline by yourself. So when this happens it only allows 1 person in the world at a time and kicks the other one out. There are versions of minecraft that "spoof" your name, you just have to find them.
I would recommend they just buy Minecraft to save a lot of hassle, and support Mojang.
2/3. Yes the IP that people connect to is the one found by whatsmyip.org and several other ip sites. The IP used to manage the server is found by typing "ifconfig" into the linux command.
Hello, I've tried updating my installation of MineOS, it seemed to go fine but some reason the webUI hasn't changed at all, no dropdown menu or anything. What am I doing wrong?
I was having trouble restoring to an earlier date, but I found your last post on it and I used the command "restore" and it did the trick. Is there a way to list all backups and pick one to restore from? I am just confused on how it did so well in finding the correct backup.
restore always picks the very last backup made (most recent restore point
The only problem I see now is that my world 2 in the web-GUI is not updated. I still see save-all, and all the other old commands.
if one is updated, so is all three. clear your browser cache
Also, please add the restoring method as a tutorial on your site. It keeps it a lot more organized so you don't have to search here. I really do appreciate your work.
the backtrack method is outlined in the ramdisk maintenance tutorial on youtube
Thanks for the help on that, but I have another question. Bukkit doesn't want to run either that or I just haven't installed the plugins right. I installed the General plugin and it doesn't seem to be working.
if it runs pure (no file 'usebukkit' in world folder) but doesnt run with bukkit, then it seems to be specific to the plugins/bukkit. since i dont use plugins or have experience with them, i have no idea what to do next, really. but id start with 1) rebooting server, 2) trying to connect to any of the screens (./findscreen.sh), 3) removing that plugin and seeing if bukkit runs with no plugins.

This. I have hourly backups set, I wanted to restore the 19:00 backup at 20:11, and couldn't work out how... the restore command restored the 20:00 one :/

In addition, I have implemented sk89q's checkworld.py for chunk validation. By adding my own code, I have created the 'repair world' feature--which will check every chunk for validity. If it is not valid for whatever reason (improper reboot or shutdown or other system fault), it will backtrack through each restore point (for ONLY the broken chunk) and replace it once it finds the first valid chunkfile. This means even if you have 10 backups of 1 broken chunk, your world will REMAIN IN THE CURRENT STATE, and the one (1) chunk that is broken will be restored from 11 backups back.
that is pretty damned awesome :biggrin.gif: where can I get that checkworld.py code?
(even though the only time I've corrupted my world - so far - is when running a script to turn 1 in 10 redstone into lapis lazuli ore because it's an older map... and running it as root. oops... glad I made a backup first :biggrin.gif:)

change the server.properties file yourself (without gui) via a program like winscp or filezilla (port 22). make the update, upload the changes to overwrite the existing file.
2) How in the world can i find the external IP that other users can connect to? is it my static external as seen by myip w/ port 25565?
yes, or you can verify/get that information from this page: http://minecraft.codeemo.com/access.php
3) The address that others need to connect to the server would be your static IP + port correct? i.e. the IP you see when you use myip.com ?
the IP listed on that page, assuming youre connecting from a computer that is behind the SAME router.

Can you go in to a little more detail about how you would change the server.properties file through winscp or filezilla? Wouldn't be sure what location to point to. I'm definitely a begginner with all this, but I can follow directions :smile.gif: Much appreciated!

winscp is an scp program. scp is like FTP, only it works .... better for this purpose.
So if you get winscp/filezilla, you can connect, and you can see all the files like you would any FTP. You can then go to the location /mnt/sda1/minecraft/one/
where you can find your server.properties (assuming non ramdisk setup).
You can copy it to your computer...you can modify the file to offline-server off or whatnot, then reupload it, overwriting the existing file. start up your server and yorue set!

When you say connect. Connect to the IP of the virtual server for MineOS, or the save path? (which im still not sure where the default setup location of the server is)?
Really like the idea of this, however ive tried on my two VPS's to install following your tutorial, but I get the same error on both.
The installation proceeds fine, I unmount the image and reboot, I get into the bootloader, and to boot.
At this stage I get the following error:
"Booting 'MineOS x86'
root (hd0,0)
Filesystem Type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /boot/bzImage text quiet
Error 15: File not found
Press any key to continue...."
and back to the bootloader :/
any ideas? - id love to be able to run it!
are you typing in the values for ./10_setup_sudo.sh that i type in on the tutorial.....or are you adjusting them to fit your server's HD configuration? also, you using virtualbox? vmware? ...'vps'?
There is a little bug in http://minecraft.codeemo.com/access.php, it tells me my port 8080 is closed, but that port is open, I can access it too, so probably a little bug in your script (or my firewall did this, I don't know). Just to inform you :smile.gif:
if it shows port 8080 is closed, it means computers outside your network cant get to em, simple as that.
if you can get to it from your host machine/within your network, firewalls and port forwarding are irrelevant
I make a new server via the web interface and select bukkit
i run the server.
all the /#list and stuff commands work
this bukkit isn't the latest one.
so i go to bukkit nad get version 188
i replace the old bukkit.jar file with the new one.
i run my server
it starts up fine
but the the bukkit /#list commands don't work. Only the /list re MC commands work
i am assuming where ever the server start command is needs to be updated to run the new bukkit.jar file?

I think bukkit decided they didnt want the # in their commands anymore.
So if youre using a recent version, then just drop that, and you should be fine.

clear your browser cache
to verify the update went well, you can type in
if its updated, it'll be at like 0.8.6
already included. /usr/games/minecraft/checkworld.py
