I even went as far as updating the firmware on my router. I have a linksys router. When i am typing in the ports for the server. and then finally the ip address. i put in the last three numbers. hit enable. then save. and thats whent eh port overlap dialog box pops up. I have no idea what to do and cant seem to find any fixes it for it. Please help in anyway you can. THank you
Have you already configured a port forward for the range your giving for it?
You can only forward one of each port to a different machine on your network. You can't forward 25565 to your new laptop, while also forwarding port 25565 to that awesome computer... You can only forward one port to one computer
Could you show us a screen shot of your current port forwarding settings?
What have you already defined/Set up under your port forwarding options?
Do you have a DMZ enabled?
What Operating system is the server running on?
Have you messed with any of your system's firewalls yet?
If you want to set up two servers within the same network, it's definitely possible, however you'll have to tell us up front if that's what you're trying to do here.
Remember, the more information you give us about your problem, the more we can help you!
MY GOD! SOMEONE TO HELP. OH THANK YOU HERO!! Okay so! I will now enable DMZ. althought when i go to enable DMZ it was a section of numbres. im not sure what numbers to use. do i use the last three numbrs of my ipv4 address? thats hwat im going to use for the time being. so now i have that enabled. Okay next Im using windows. Im not sure where to begin to mess with any firewall settings so no i have not. As for the first question you asked. are you asking for a picture of my "Port range forward" tab in my 192.blahblah?
I only asked four questions... please try to respond clearly, and number your responses so I know which question you're answering

Did you have a DMZ enabled before your first post?
Your last post was a little unclear... sorry.
Anyways... You'll definitely want to set up your firewalls properly... however I think we should also move away from the DMZ you enabled... If you value the security of your server, a port forward might be necessary.
An old post I made about allowing the Minecraft Server through windows Firewall:
Sounds like your firewalls might be closed still. Have you allowed both Java and Minecraft through your firewalls?
You'll need to find all of the programs that manage firewalls on your computer. Windows has a built in firewall. Macs have a firewall, but it's usually disabled. Additionally, many virus software packages come with their own firewall. Norton, Symantec, and Kaspersky all have their own firewall, and you'll need to configure them all if you want your server to be reachable.
You'll need to have your goals set to let two things through your firewall:
1.) The Java Platform SE Binary needs to be let through. This usually manifests itself by simply allowing the Java.exe through.
2.) the Minecraft server needs to be let through, and you should be able to add a rule to open up its port. Usually you can allow 25565 through your firewall as an inbound and outbound exception to be allowed through.
Users who post here are commonly using Windows Vista or higher. Windows Vista, 7, and 8 all have a similar look when it comes to setting up windows firewall. These two videos should help you allow both Java and the Minecraft Server through a windows firewall: Java
Minecraft Server
If you have additional firewalls, or these steps didn't help you much, let us know what went wrong and where. Did anything change?

DMZ for a Minecraft server that also functions as a home desktop computer is not advisable.
My bad. I was having some technical issues yesterday so i was on a different computer which threw me off a bit. Let me answer question 2. first, I had tried it with DMZ enabled and disabled and received the same problem each time so i will now just leave it off. Now as for the firewall, I have "Java™ Platform SE binary" allowed on my firewall, but i do not see anything about minecraft in the Allowed Programs area. So i went through and found the Minecraft Server program and told my firewall to allow it, but the problem still continues. The second video you provided from an old thread seems promising, but during the set up it requires that you allow the port "25565" which is where my problem begins. Whenever i attempt to allow 25565 i get the port overlap error on my Routers page. so for now i just have it on 25575 while i try to test everything out. Ill now provide you with the screenshot of the port forward set up you wanted.
Well you already have one server set up on Port 25565.... You can't have two servers on the same port. Instead keep everything the same, and make another server using 25575 like your doing. When you're finished, everything about server two will be about Port 25575.
Make sure to change the port in the server properties file:
Does that make sense? You can't set things up on 25565 on your new server because it's already being used. Instead, set your server up on a different port.
So after that i now have a whole new set of problems. Im about to ready to tear my hair out. I made another section of the 25575 and assigned it to the udp and the other TCP so that i wouldnt get that ing port overlap error. that didnt fix the problem. so i go to just switch it back to the just one and have it do both. Well now i cant ing delete one of them. So i just unenable it. And assign the old one to port 25585. Oh and just wait ti gets better. Now when i run the server it says "failed to bind to port perhaps another server is on it"So here is what the cluster bomb of my problems look like now. Thank you for being patient by the way. Im sure its just as stressful having to deal with tards like me.
Yup, so far so good. You'll have to forward your port, you'll have to set your server up on the port you choose (In the server properties file)
When you try and connect, you can still use localhost:25575 if the server is on your computer. But if you ever use an IP address of any kind (internal or external) to connect to your server, you'll need the following:
If your computer is hosting a server on port 25575, and your computer's IP is 192.168.1.138,
You'll need to type:
192.168.1.138:25575
to be able to connect! (watch out, there are periods '.' and colons ':' in there. Make sure to keep track of which one goes where. (If you try connecting using your External IP, make sure to include this as well.
XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:25575
Minecraft will try to connect to port 25565 by default, so we add the ':25575' bit to tell minecraft to another port. Do you know why your household is already forwarding 25565 to another computer?
You can get the 25565 rules to stop complaining about overlap if you just disable one, and set the other to "BOTH".
You are not able to create two rules for the same port, when you want both TCP and UDP, use "BOTH".
I have NO idea why there are already two things running 25565. perhaps remenants of an old minecraft server..? ive made some before. do you think i should delete those?
Hi. New problem! so i tried it with that ip and all that. And the "failed to bind to port" is still there and will not go away. i have zero idea how to fix this. Also this is my "last approved post" sooo.. i hope thats not bad

*learned how to edit. anyways when i try localhost its says its refused the connection
Start your server up, and then in your minecraft client, connect to: localhost:25575
