Hey guys, I'm having problems connecting to a vanilla server on my home network. I've been searching the forums for a solution but haven't found anything yet that seems to address my issues.
I have 2 laptops connected to a home network running Vista and Windows 7. Neither has a problem connecting to the network or communicating. I'm just trying to use a vanilla server to allow my son and I to play together. The Windows 7 laptop has no problems connecting to the server on either computer. However, the Vista laptop only shows 1 bar strength, even when it is running the server. It occasionally can connect but usually just says connection lost, end of stream.
I've tried turning on and off the firewall. I think the port is forwarded even though this is internal connection so I don't think it matters. As far as I can tell both laptops are set up the same so I don't know what is causing the problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
You don't need an internet connection for a LAN game as long as you've logged in once before on each of the machines.
actually, u do. its just that u can play LAN offline, which means that you dont need to be signed into your minecraft account, but you do need to have an internet connection to play LAN. And you also need to be on the same network.

That is incorrect. I attest that I have played Minecraft with other players, without an internet connection via only internet network.
Guys, thanks for the feedback. I finally got a chance to try out playing on a local LAN server. Everything seems to work (the laptop can see the other one) except when I try to connect it immediately says "Connection Lost, End of Stream." Any more suggestions?
i think your a bit confused. when your connected to a network, that means you have an internet connection.
Clearly not a network professional. Well here, Ill clear this up as I AM in fact a network administrator. There is a HUGE difference between a Network Connection and a Internet Connection. You DO NOT need internet to play over a LAN connection. There, Argument solved.

Make sure you have your firewall set to allow incoming connections and outgoing packets to be sent, I don't advise it but a simple way to test this is to disable all firewalls. Ex. AVG, Avast, Windows Defender. See if the issue persists.

Allow me to interject with a possible nuance: I think what he means is that when you log in at first, it will attempt to authenticate with Mojang's authentication servers, which requires an internet connection. If this authentication fails and you've previously successfully logged in, you are permitted to play offline. If this authentication fails but you've never previously successfully logged in, I believe the behavior is that you will be unable to play, unless you are using a cracked version of the software.

I tried turning off firewalls on both laptops at the same time and that didn't make a difference. It is like it is not even trying to connect, it immediately gives Connection Lost error. Is there a test I can do to determine if it is a network or Mincraft problem? I don't know if I'm chasing a network setting or a mincraft software issue.

Yea, my internet connection is good. It seems to be a communication problem between two laptops on the same router. One laptop is running McAfee total protection, the other just standard windows firewall and defender. Any thoughts if either of those programs could be causing a communication problem?

My bad; I apologize for having misread your post. I would try disabling both. Also, if you two are connected via wireless, do you both have great signals? Have you tried making sure Windows recognizes the network as either a Home or Office network (and not Public)?
Open an Explorer window
Enter the following: Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center
Under "View your active networks"
Ensure it says "Work" or "Home" network and not "Public network."

Thanks!
That is probably the simplest route.

Try pingtest.net.
