You need to run this command in the server console. The server won't let a normal user run any commands, so the fact that you are a normal user running a command is a problem... Once you op yourself from the server, then you can run all the commands from your client chat.
Came across this via Google search...
Are these answers assuming someone is running a stand alone persistent server ? I'm wondering about running a multiplayer, having opened a single player to lan. Is there a way to restrict the use of cheats to the host ?

If you are playing vanilla multiplayer LAN, you do not have the ability to make one user an operator, and not another player. Either everyone gets all permissions (cheats), or no one gets any. Now, cheats can be enabled/disabled whenever you re-open the game on LAN, so you can temporarily open the multiplayer game, do what you need to do, and then close-reopen the connection to disable them, limiting the cheats for a short period of time.
It's that, or you start experimenting running a LAN server.
If you head that route, you can choose which players can use commands and which ones can't, and if that's not enough for you, then you could mess with a modified spigot server, and use world-guard, and a permissions pluggin to further add restrictions.
where <username> should be replaced with your Minecraft name... Mine would look like:
If you however, are running a single player world, then this method will not work... Please let us know what you are running.

I'll get a screenshot.
I admire the fact that you can work with these people. Good job!

Happy playing!
After u op urself, can u do set gamemode and stuff like that?
As far as I know, on Minecraft 1.10.2 being hosted on Serveromat, Opping someone does not let them do gamemode. Oh, the pain :|
Opping does let you set gamemode, though you have to use the right level. By default I believe /op will only op you to level 1.
Use /op <Username> 4 to give yourself full permissions. Op levels as shown on the Wiki:
1 - Ops can bypass spawn protection.
2 - Ops can use /clear, /difficulty, /effect, /gamemode, /gamerule, /give, and /tp, and can edit command blocks.
3 - Ops can use /ban, /deop, /kick, and /op.
4 - Ops can use /stop.

/op [playername] only will give you op 4. Be sure to type the other op numbers if you only want to give certain op levels.
