what does THIS mean this happens on some of my versions which i NEED for modding and it happens even without mods installed
I did everything that the tutorial asked me to do. When i launched the game it did not list my new moded folder. Also i noticed that in my versions folder which i'm running 1.7.10 that i didn't have a .jar file, only a .json?? I'm assuming that is the problem. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!
So i duplicated the b1.2_02 file and renamed it to b1.2_mods i renamed the .jar, .json and the "id" but the file does not show up in the 'Use versions' section of new profile.
I am running Mac OS X 10.9.4 and minecraft launcher 1.5.1
I made a duplicate of 1.7.9 in the versions folder, renamed it as 1.7.9mods
Renamed the json and jar as 1.7.9mods.jar and 1.7.9mods.json
(since I use mac) I opened 1.7.9mods.json in text edit and put 1.7.9mods.json in the quotation marks on the first line
added my mod (.zip) in the duplicate folder and named it 1.7.9mods.zip
I did this all while my launcher and minecraft was closed and when I go to new profile and click on the versions bar to choose versions. My 1.7.9mods version that I created isn't there.

I feel like Microsoft has disabled mods in the new launcher in some update, because last year when i installed some mods they worked perfectly but now when i try to install mods the whole custom jar file will be replaced and if you modify the json file enough it will no longer show on the version list so you cannot use any mods on onlinemode activated servers, or just using this new launcher.

This guide needs to be updated; you have to edit the json file to remove "downloads" for the client jar, as demonstrated in the following link; I figured it out myself before seeing this bug report and have not had any problems; to be safe, I've made sure to back up the original json file for 1.6.4 (the version I still play on and mainly mod; I discovered it when making a cave mod for 1.9), which still works despite having none of the "downloads" sections (the original 1.6.4 json is only 3.5 KB, compared to 11 KB for the new one):
If you have any old modded installations you can copy the json files for them and rename them as appropriate (assuming you want to mod the same version of course; I've seen people successfully use jsons for different versions though, although this likely won't work across versions with significant changes, like 1.7-1.8).
P.S.: Despite whatever you have heard, this or any of the other "bad" changes made to the game recently have nothing whatsoever to do with Microsoft.
Also, I'm wondering if anybody has a "barebones" mod installer similar to the ones used by Optifine and Forge, which do not have any issues with all of this and would be really nice to use; for example, something that I could just add some class files to and edit a configuration file for a profile/mod name to use when installing (I suppose I could hack the one Optifine uses; I've decompiled the 1.6.4 Optifine-modded jar before; but sp614x might not be happy if I used it to distribute mods even if there is no actual Optifine code present, only the installer. That said, many people do not have nor want to install Java (not the Java that comes with the launcher) just to install a mod).

I was wondering if you could send me the old json file or upload it somewhere so I can download it.
EDIT: Scratch that, turns out it's just that little section not every download area.
EDIT 2: Doesn't seem to work for forge. The jar is not redownloaded but simply transferring the files in the universal jar that is given to the modified version does not work.

Forge is supposed to be installed with its installer; looking at the Forge installation that I have (albeit for 1.6.2) it installed a library to ".minecraft\libraries\net\minecraftforge\minecraftforge\9.10.0.842\minecraftforge-9.10.0.842.jar" and this library is specified within the version json; the jar file itself is actually just a renamed vanilla 1.6.2 jar. In theory simply dumping the contents of the Forge library into the jar should work, but Forge will complain that the jar has been modified and refuse to run unless you add arguments to tell it to ignore the changes. However, the file that you download also contains an installer and is not the actual Forge library (Optifine, at least for 1.6.4, works if you install it as a jar mod instead of using its installer, which is how I still install it; this is different though and is probably because the installer classes, which are also added, do not conflict with any of Minecraft's classes).
Also, you can install jar mods the same way as Forge installs itself and avoid the issues with the current launcher since the jar is modified at runtime; I took advantage of this myself when I added my own mods to my Forge installation as I mentioned here (this also causes Forge to complain about a tampered jar since it apparently checks the classes after they are loaded in memory, not on disk):
This should work as long as the launcher does not redownload modified, renamed jsons (which would make pretty much any form of modding impossible unless you used a different launcher since I think every mod requires at least a custom json)
Sorry for bumping this extremely old thread, but this method doesn't work, as the launcher now checks for the SHA of the file. If it doesn't match up, then the file is deleted and the game won't launch.

You just need to edit the json file to remove a few lines that contains the SHA and download URL (I'm assuming you are playing offline since if you are online it downloads a fresh jar).
Note that the Wiki has a tutorial on installing mods which is also outdated (it also tells you that you can just use Windows's built-in zip capabilities but that will only work on versions that do not have "aux.class" in them).
(you can also use an "original" json from before this year, as I still use for my modded 1.6.4 versions, but unless you have a backup the launcher overwrites vanilla jsons when they are updated; I still have it since I had only changed the version name inside the file for my mods)
An alternative is to use a 3rd party launcher like MultiMC, which can make installing jar mods as simple as installing Forge mods (I have not used any).

Removing the SHA-1 hash value didn't work, neither did the downloaded URL, as it would output an error. If I would remove the values but leave the SHA-1 hash and Download URL tags there, it would error constantly along with deleting the file. The ONLY way I was able to do this was putting in the EXACT SHA-1 hash of my own copy of the file, then launching offline to trick the launcher into thinking that the file is correct and unmodified. I also keep a backup folder of the same exact file with the same SHA-1 hash, just in case the launcher deletes it.

That makes it sound like you are not modifying the json correctly, which I've seen happen before, and no matter how much I tried to guide them they just could not get one of my mods to work.
For comparison, this is the json that I use for my modded 1.6.4 versions (from before Mojang updated it earlier this year with the only changes being the "id" and filename; I did not have to remove the download links or SHA because they were not present. They also included download URLs for all of the libraries as well but they are not important, just the one for the client jar, which is near the end of the file):
When I launch this modded version I get this in the launcher log, indicating that it tried to download the jar but failed to do so (if there is no download URL it tries to download a file with the exact name as the version, which fails if it isn't a valid version name), and used the local copy:

My JSON looks nothing like that. It has a whole bunch of other 'things' and values present(because I created the beta 1.7.3 profile a few days ago) that make sure that modding doesn't take place. The values don't accept wildcards either, leaving them blank makes the launcher check the hashes against nothing, which will always fail due to the way the launcher is designed.

Just curious, what happens if you use my json with a modded instance of 1.6.4? If you need a mod try installing this one (version 3); rename the version and such to "World1"; you can easily tell if it is installed by creating a world with the seed "-123775873255737467", which should look like this at spawn (note the "Lake" biome, which is clearly not vanilla); for comparison, this is vanilla).
I really am mystified as to why my launcher (version 1.6.70) allows mods, including by taking a "current" json and deleting the "downloads" section (the entire section, not just the URLs and SHAs, and not making the latter blank, which it sounds like you are doing - I mean deleting the entire section highlighted here, with nothing after the "assets" <version> line except for a closing brace), which I just tested successfully on 1.6.4, with other versions being no different.
Actually, are you using the "new" new launcher, the one that is in development (the one they talk about in this thread, and the current launcher, is the "new" one that came out for 1.6)? Then thanks for the heads-up - I know NOT to upgrade to it, that's for sure! It is just plain dumb of Mojang to pull something like this; already you need fancy installers to install mods to avoid all the hassle as you've experienced (and as I've asked before, why isn't there a "generic" mod installer that lets you add your mod files and custom profile information to it, then it installs them automatically? You know, like the installers used by Optifine and Forge, but you place your own mod files into a folder inside of or alongside the installer jar).

what does THIS mean this happens on some of my versions which i NEED for modding and it happens even without mods installed
I am running Mac OS X 10.9.4 and minecraft launcher 1.5.1
Renamed the json and jar as 1.7.9mods.jar and 1.7.9mods.json
(since I use mac) I opened 1.7.9mods.json in text edit and put 1.7.9mods.json in the quotation marks on the first line
added my mod (.zip) in the duplicate folder and named it 1.7.9mods.zip
I did this all while my launcher and minecraft was closed and when I go to new profile and click on the versions bar to choose versions. My 1.7.9mods version that I created isn't there.
What did I do wrong????

It doe's not work
I feel like Microsoft has disabled mods in the new launcher in some update, because last year when i installed some mods they worked perfectly but now when i try to install mods the whole custom jar file will be replaced and if you modify the json file enough it will no longer show on the version list so you cannot use any mods on onlinemode activated servers, or just using this new launcher.
I have a server and a texturepack.
MCL-4334 Minecraft gets reinstalled everytime you launch it
If you have any old modded installations you can copy the json files for them and rename them as appropriate (assuming you want to mod the same version of course; I've seen people successfully use jsons for different versions though, although this likely won't work across versions with significant changes, like 1.7-1.8).

Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
I was wondering if you could send me the old json file or upload it somewhere so I can download it.
EDIT: Scratch that, turns out it's just that little section not every download area.
EDIT 2: Doesn't seem to work for forge. The jar is not redownloaded but simply transferring the files in the universal jar that is given to the modified version does not work.
"Next, open a Notepad window. Then drag the JSON file in the folder into the white space of notepad."
WHAAAAAAAAAT??? Are you seriously doing that in that way??? OMG...
And you make a tutorial on how to mod minecraft...

Check out my website Here!Website is down until further notice.

Check out my website Here!Website is down until further notice.

Check out my website Here!Website is down until further notice.Just curious, what happens if you use my json with a modded instance of 1.6.4?
