Hey there guys.
For a while now on one of my worlds I've been getting this little crash after a few minutes of gameplay (Or sooner if I interface with some Data-heavy mods like Applied Energistics).
The game will get really bad lag spikes and eventually freeze and shut down (Shutting down internal server).
I've been through the forums and all over the internet and found dozens of people with the same problem who had their issues resolved, but they never worked for me or couldnt because im using the default launcher, not Bukkit or Tekkit or FTB.
It only happens on one of my worlds currently (Which has a large industrial section of a lot of mods) but it will happen on others if things get too wild.
I used to use NEI, which, upon removing, made it happen MUCH less frequently, but living without NEI with 20+ mods is a pain, so I'd like it back.
I have a fully updated Java 64-bit and Graphics card and 4GB of Dual-Channel RAM (Which may lie the problem).
But here is the crash report..

A detailed walkthrough of the error, its code path and all known details is as follows:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And I am using version 1.5.1 with the latest version of Forge for it.
My list of mods are

Buildcraft 3
Computercraft
Custom Mob Spawner
Dimensional Doors
Mo' Creatures
Electric Expansion
Ender Storage
Extra Bees
ExtrabiomesXL
Factorization
Flashlight

Natura
Mo' Food (Obscure mod, also known as Plus Daliments)
Railcraft

I also have one more issue. I cannot enter new dimensions (Which im sure is related to the issue at hand) such as new Mystcraft ages, the Wyvern Dimension from Mo' Creatures, the Twilight Forest wont load anymore of it's boundries, no new Dimensional Doors, I can't even create new worlds.
Already made and loaded dimensions work fine, though.
Thank you guys for any help you may give and I promise to relay whatever I learn to other forums to help others with the same problems.
Aw, unfortunately it didn't work. But thanks so much for your help. Hopefully other people will find that useful.
I just uninstalled a few mods and it works okay. It crashes once in a while but I still cant create new dimensions/worlds.
Thanks anyways, though.
i discovered this problem a few days ago once i got to about 140-150 mods. What fixed mine is adding the line that rustyxxl suggested but i kept it at 128 and it instantly fixed it. Im upwards of 170 mods and it hasn't gotten that error since. So you could possibly try taking PermSize down from 256 to 128. Here is my command line:
I'm not sure if I understand it correctly but the way I see it PermGen is java trying to permanently generate as many .class files as it can. If you specify the heap size it unloads the ones your not using saving much needed space especially when first loading a new world.
I Have a 16 gig ram server and I got this issue running a couple of different plugins, bukkit manager along wit another logging progrie, but ran into this perm eme gen erroe, WTF i say system says Im using like 2 gig ram max. Well I really wanted my maps and such back up so I reinstalled dynmaps, BAM withing 5 min, over and over, took it out, researched, Set the max gen size to 1 gig, wow all 180 plugins are smooth again.
So, just to make sure I'm doing this right..
I edited to Minecraft 2GB launcher .dat to say this.
java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -XX:PermSize=256m -XX:MaxPermSize=512m -jar MinecraftLauncher.jar
And nothing really changed. Was I doing it right and something else is the issue or did I mess up?
I currently have 4 gigs on my computer and I have to admit that I dont really understand the editing process. So Maybe I'm going too low with it or something. But thanks for your help.
Rusty!! I just updated my Launcher to the new 1.6 one (I've been using the old 1.3 one, dont ask me how or why) But I was able to add your exception and everything seems to work perfectly! I could kiss you!
Thanks so much. And Gamerfanatic, I never knew about that but that sounds AWESOMELY useful. I'll definatly keep it in mind (Yes, that was EXACTLY how things were). Dang.. I've always wanted that feature. Thanks so much!!
I was having major problems with a big mod collection where the game would freeze as described. I was going crazy juggling mods around looking for a bug but ending up more like someone chasing a rainbow. . .
After I was beating my head against the wall for a while. . . someone pointed me to this thread and just using the arguments you posted above for the 1.6.4 launcher were enough to clear up the problem. Thank you for posting it!!
This is sort of a big issue for mod collectors. . . It is so important it should be one of the sayings that the client shows over the logo when you get the start page. Minecraft: "Don't Crash. .FIX YOUR PermSize!!"
Also, here is an explanation a nice person named Sironin gave me about how this all works:
Xms tells Java the minimum heap memory size, or the heap size it should start with. If your java is up to date you don't really need to set this.
Xmx tells Java the maximum heap memory size, or how much total ram it can ever use for the heap. If you encounter stuttering after playing awhile and notice your memory hovering between 90-100% usage, garbage collection can't free up space in ram as fast as you're using it. This can be alleviated by restarting the client and/or allocating a larger max heap size. You should generally only see larger maximum heap sizes above 4G on servers. Although I suppose someone might try to install every mod there is, which might need more.
PermSize tells Java the minimum PermGen memory size. Java defaults to a value too low to really start most mod packs. Generally, PermSize should be 1/4th your max heap size; although 256m should be sufficient unless you're getting PermGen related crashes. It should be noted PermSize is a separate pool of memory from heap and they're additive. So if you have 2G allocated to heap and 512m to permsize, and only have 3g of ram (such as in a 32bit environment), you're leaving only 512mb of ram to run everything else on your computer. That can cause slowdowns as the OS tries to use your hard drive as ram and/or do constant garbage collection because it can't find enough available.
MaxPermSize tells java when to crash with a permgen error. It's generally not a good idea to set this unless you're really limited on available memory and your heap+permgen is near enough to your total memory that it could cause problems in your OS if Java tried to suck up more.
In more layman's terms, PermGen is for loading your mods. More mods means more PermGen. Sometimes you won't notice a problem until you actually use a lot of different kinds of mods in a world in one place. Heap is for doing stuff in the world with the stuff that's loaded. Everything from growing crops to playing a bajillion sound events in someone's factory. Sometimes you can get away with less heap size by just disabling most mods' sounds in their respective configs or just turning the sound off entirely.
Class files are the files that contain the compiled bytecode for the game. It's the game/mod's code rather than it's assets (sounds/textures/etc). The stuff under the hood versus the shiny exterior.
Here it is again for people that want to copy and paste:
