Help! My son cannot play the spit scren multiplayer on the xbox 360. We have the hd cord and purchased the mine craft download. We went into settings and checked the split screen multiplayer box. When entering a world, the game will only identify the first controller. Tried hitting "start" on the second controller multiple times but it will not join the game. Made sure both controllers were signed in. Single player works fine. Please help!
We have a live gold account and we are signed in. However, at my brother's house, the kids play offline with their profiles and not logged into the live gold account and they can still play split-screen multiplayer on the xbox. We have checked the settings and connections and cannot figure out why it works at one house but not the other.

I agree... we regularly play offline splitscreen with two profiles that have no Live accounts; but the "online game" box must be unchecked for this. If you're playing an online game, one profile must be a Live Gold member.
Contrary to what some believe, we have also successfully used RGB component cables (Green, Blue, Red, White, Red) with splitscreen mode... although we have since switched to HDMI cables since this enabled us to leave the XBox hooked up and switch back and forth between our DVD player, satellite, and the XBox without continually changing cables back and forth.
From everything you describe, you should be good to go. I know this seems like a dumb question, but are you hitting the start button (to the right of the center button, and not the center one)? I'm only asking, because I've caught myself doing this and wondering why I wasn't joining in. Another thought would be to try pairing the signal of the controllers to the XBox again.
If it says "press start to join game" that means the second controller is connected to the xbox, there is no reason to re-sync it.
Can you please elaborate what "it will not join the game" is? we need to know what's actually happening in order to help you, does it freeze your xbox, does it exit the game, does it sign out of the profile?

To elaborate, the first controller signs in with the xbox live account. The second controller has signed in with another live account and also tried signing in with a profile (non live). When the first controller enters the game, after checking the multi player split screen option, the second controler hits "start"and nothing happens. The controller is on and signed in. The controller never joins the game no matter how many times we press start.

On xbox dashboard go to settings and make sure your xbox visual settings is not on 420p.

The red, white and yellow cords are the standard AV cords. An HDMI cord looks like this:
On the Xbox home, you can go under settings-> System settings-> Graphics. Under graphics make sure the selected option is on the max which i belive is 1080p. I hope i helped.

Are you using HD? You must either have an HDMI cable or component(red, green, blue) and not composite(red, white, yellow). And make sure your xbox visual settings are set to atleast 720p. There is also a split screen box you must check when loading a map.
