I am one of the OPs that host a rather active and long standing realm for Pocket Edition/Win10 (http://the77thCombine.com). We've been running pretty much ever since Realms came out for Pocket Edition, and have had a very healthy amount of players. They explored, built, and mined... quite a bit. We noticed after a while (a couple months of very active play), no amount of management of long hopper chains, limiting complex redstone, lit cave( Mob management) would prevent the realm from being very laggy, from disconnecting, or even not allowing people to join. Chunks would get corrupted, and we would have to download, fill it in, and re-upload... lots of management.
When 1.0 came out there was promised that the world file structure was going to be better and therefore realms more stable. So we "archived" the realm and deemed it season1. Season 2 started and everything was fast, lag free, and enjoyable again. And now 6 months in... we are back to the same issue again. People constantly are being disconnected. Realm refuses to load chunks, and make you wait for them to show up, or just bounce you out completely. We get mini roll backs (although that has gotten better in this last 1 or 2 updates)... the list goes on.
This season we've been extra cautious about builds near spawner and limited building hight/depth/redstone to prevent constantly loaded lag. We have a team of OPs that vet our players and world, so nothing out of the ordinary going on there. No dupping as far as we can tell or run away systems. There doesn't appear to be any corrupt chunks (like we were getting in Season 1) as works fine some days and terrible on others in the exact same spots. Even the number of players doesn't seem to be an issue, as we've seen it bug out when even just a single user is on.
Only thing I can figure is the Minecraft Realm servers were never designed to be able to run a realm where there are 20-30 people playing on it (obviously not at the same time), and all building huge amazing builds. Our realm has grown now to 1.5 GBs, and is only getting bigger. Manually backing it up and uploading to our admin realm becomes harder and hard as we don't have the admin tools to check things like our PC brethren.
We play on Hard and Survival. You loose something - tough. It makes building and acquiring things all the more rewarding. We are a group of well vetted players to avoid the drama and grief that many of the "pop-up" realms have with tons of new payers causing havoc. We are mostly older more mature players that can appreciate the full world building aspects and exploration that Minecraft has to offer.
But all these issues are turning the members of our realm off of MineCraft. What's the point of playing in a realm if you have to delete it after a couple months? What's the point of playing if you have no idea if you are going to be disinfected while in mid flight, or suddenly find yourself re-spawned above or below your position in lava and lose all your items? Or you die not because of something stupid you did... but because the realm decided to crash and those items you just collected or used just went poof. We are starting to get to the point where we might once again have to abandoned everything that has been done, just so people can stay on for more than 30 minutes without crashing. Reseting a world every couple months is not the experience that we are looking for in Minecraft. We like to build, explore, and soar everything that Minecraft lets us do.
I'm desperately hoping that 1.1 fixes some of these bugs, but i'm not holding my breath. I think there just isn't a place for a well developed world like ours to exist on Realms. I think this is why thy limit the amount of people that can get on to 10, when even your "normal" PC server can handle much, much more. Does anyone have any idea if they are ever going to realease realms software for the PE/Win10 worlds? So we can run it on servers that can support the level of experience we'd like to get from Minecraft? Heck, we would be willing, nay excited, to give Microsoft more money if that meant having a server that could actually handle something more than a "kiddy" realm experience that has to be wiped clean every few months because it can't handle the amount of stuff going on.
Note: I put it here as I play via Win10, but we have people that play across the realm from different iOS, Android, and Windows10 devices. This could as easily fit into the Pocket edition discussion area. If it needs to be some other location let me know. Didn't see a "Win10/PE realms" support section.
TLDR: Is there a "pro" realm option coming to us PE users? Our realm has gotten big 1.5GBs & is getting so unstable it's hard to play anymore. We don't want to have to reset the realm every couple months just so people can connect and play.
Is there a limit for PE realms that a world stops responding correctly? If so then perhaps our best course is to trim the world chunks to get below whatever size realm you do support. I'm not exactly sure the best course of action on that but can try removing chunks.
From my research and test, it appears that you can't upload a world once you are past 1GB. However there seems to be no documentation that confirms this. Does realms not officially support worlds over 1GB?
Also I have already exhausted the support that is listed on your site. Hence my reaching out to official support. The crash lookup tool also only appears to deal with the Java version of the game and not the Win10/PE version so unfortunately that is not of any help.
The forums also are unable to help as they don't have access to the PE server code, and the forum has numerous posts about the same issue I was reporting to you on. Each thread ending with that Mojang can't handle worlds being loaded for more than a few months as they seem to just stop working.
Please let me know if I'm misunderstanding something, as it seems odd Minecraft Realms does not seem to support a realm being open for more than a few months at a time.
Suffice it to say... I'm not holding my breath support is going to be much support. Has anyone had any luck dealing with Mojang Support on similar issues? Or have you too just got a boilerplate response?
So got what probably is my last response from Mojang's support. Short version is they don't have a technical support. Only support for account and billing questions. All other inquires are directed here to the forums for support, the FAQs for technical detail, or bug report (if you think you found something wrong).
I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble with your Realm. Unfortunately, this help center is limited mostly to accounts and billing; we do not have a technical support team.
So I've submitted a "bug report" here. Please add any additional information you may have that's relevant regarding very large realms becoming unresponsive to this bug tracker - https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/REALMS-333
Thanks for posting this. I have commented on your bug report. While corrupt chunks have been/possibly are an issue, all the evidence points to this being an issue of poor hardware. They should upgrade their realms severs or possibly allocate more resources automatically once a realm exceeds 1 Gb. As I stated in the report, your realm will become unplayable at 1.6 Gb so I would reign in exploration activities as much as possible. There is actually a bug report already dealing with this so maybe you can upvote this one https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MCPE-12347
Best of luck and hopefully they will act on this sometime soon.
