Anyone running into this problem? When I quit the game while underground, when I log back in I spawn in the overworld right over the position I was at underground when I quit. It is a real pain when I logout at night in the game. Myou only workaround is to return to surface level then logout.
I have had this problem with the iOS version. It has happened about a half dozen times. I usually log out of the game rather than just quit. The first time it happened, I didn't know what hit me - had I been put on a different world? Nothing was familiar. I was that far from home (didn't realize then how far my tunnels went). Only after I made a compass did I find my way back home. The other times I popped up above ground in places I recognized.
I have also tried to get back to the surface before quitting now that I know what has been happening.

I was having this problem when playing on a LAN world hosted by iOS but that was in the initial release of 0.9.5; Mojang has since released a second 0.9.5 for android that fixes bugs like that, dying when spawning, spawning in random places and dying, yada yada yada.
Go to the google play store and see if there is an available update.

I did download the latest version, but the problem is still there. If I'm in my shelter, I spawn on top of it. If I'm underground, I will spawn in the cave right above me or in the overworld. It's very annoying sometimes, especially when I spawn at night and I find myself being surrounded by a horde of skeletons...

Out of sheer curiosity, instead of hitting the back button and clicking exit to main menu, just click the Home key to exit the game. Wait a minute and go back in to see if the problem remains.

On my Android (Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7 inch) the home button doesn't end that game. Instead the game is running in the background and since the game doesn't pause with the option menu up...
As for shelter building, I have to put a trapdoor on the roof now just in case I spawn up there...
My Galaxy SII behaves differently. When I hit the home key, it takes me out of the game. When I launch the game again, i'm back at the initial screen. I have noticed that if I hit the home key, I tend to spawn in the correct location. If I click the back, and quit to title... I may end up in the overworld if I was in a cave.

Y'know? I bought Minecraft because I thought it was a war game where you had to create tactically placed proximity explosive devices...

Nothing to see here.
