I have a name tag and have applied a name to it on an anvil. Now how do I use it to name an adult villager?
According to the wiki, "(n)ame tags used on villagers will always name the villager instead of opening the trading interface." But this has not been my experience. Each time I try, even while crouching, activating a villager with a name tag in my hand still opens the villager's trading interface. I can only assume the wiki information here is for the PC version only, but there isn't any specific information for Xbox 360 Edition.
I am playing in survival mode, so I can't just name a villager spawn egg. I've seen the trick for standing in a nether portal, but I'd rather not bring all my villagers to my nearest nether portal, nor build one near them. Is there some other way to apply a name tag to a villager?

Hi, I'm Augur and I'm from New Zealand (NZ). Just call me "Augur". I'm an older person playing Minecraft Xbox 360 Legacy Console Edition without Xbox Gold (no online gaming, sorry), so please don't hate on the old. 😄

I wouldn't be very surprised if it is for PC only.

97% of teenagers would scream if they saw Justin Bieber on top of a tower about to jump,if you were the 3% sitting eating popcorn screaming "do a backflip" copy and paste this as you signature [/b]
Generation:9008 of this is the first time you have seen this add one more on to the generation on your signature[/b]
Yeah, thanks for that monkey4ggh. Any ideas which will answer my question, apart from the nether portal trick?

Thanks for explaining this. I don't have any baby villagers. I've raided two villages now and moved / coaxed the residents to come to my base, so I probably have well over the pop cap for the available "houses" in the vicinity. I wasn't too concerned about despawning, my desire to name the villagers was purely cosmetic, but it is something that should be theoretically possible. I may have to try the Nether Portal trick after all. Thanks again for your help.

Here's an easier way; the double clicking LT wouldn't work for me.
Click the beeznees out of LT while continuesly pressing B. Worked the second time the trading interface closed.
Finally got ten villagers named in less than a minute. 👊
