    Same problem here. Using cheap bluenext b/g wifi dongle. worked perfectly for months and months, then this problem starts the other day and continues since.

    Changed my network adapter from an Atheros to a D-Link. Server works fine now, not one issue anymore! Seems changing your network adapter (if you're one of those people using an Atheros) is the only fix for this.

    Also, not sure if this will help with possibly fixing the issue with Atheros adapters, but mine was built into the computer, no card. Just a little FYI.

    Ya, my Atheros is built in as well. I'm too poor to buy another ethernet card, and I can't get a job :/. Out of all the things my dad could have chose to rebuild this computer after it died, he just had to pick an Atheros ethernet card....

    I'm getting an error every time I try to open the client and it forces me to play offline. The error says this in plain text:

    <html><body>






    <center>Failed to update news
    java.net.SocketException: Permission denied: connect</center>
    </body></html>

    And every time I try to go onto multiplayer I get the same error minus the text messages but including altered text:

    java.net.SocketException: Permission denied: connect

    So yeah...
    It opened up the first time but after updating it wouldn't connect directly anymore (I only tried multiplayer later). It works for the "play offline" option on single player and I can play online if I go to the website (just now learned that) but the client itself seems to be locking me out. None of the proposed fixes (that I am capable of enacting with my limited computer experiences) have done anything to change this problem. I have a new computer with everything updated and am running windows 7. I tried reinstallintg everything I could think of short of windows itself and turning off security programs did nothing either.

    Any clue if/when this is going to be fixed?

    I have solved the problem. :Diamond: It is because you are playing offline. You need to play online atleast once to play on multiplayer. :SSSS: Here is the game online http://www.minecraft.net/game/ Always play there in multiplayer. :Skeleton: :Spider: :Zombie: :SSSS: :opblock:

    Been having this problem on one of my computers for a while now. Doesn't matter what server.
    The other computers on my network (2 desktop computers and 1 laptop) all work well with Minecraft. The computer with the problem (a third desktop computer) gets this error after a few minutes and drops all internet connection, while the other computers can still play for as long as we want to.

    OS: Fresh Windows XP Professional 32-bit (reinstalled yesterday as a potential fix)
    Motherboard: Asus P5B SE
    CPU: Intel Pentium 4 @3.00GHz
    GPU: nVidia GeForce 7300GS
    RAM: 2 GB
    Network Adapter: Attansic L1 Gigabit Ethernet (Integrated)

    The motherboard and the network adapter are the same for all 3 desktop computers, but only one is experiencing this problem.


    :Green: EDIT: After finishing some additional possible fixes found in this thread regarding the network adapter (turning off 'allow windows to turn off this device to save power' and increasing 'number of transmit buffers' to 512) I can now play Minecraft on all my computers without any connection problems. :smile.gif:

    Well, I feel I need to put my two-cents in on this issue.
    I came upon this thread via Google searching the error when I got disconnected from SMP.
    I've got an integrated nic on my motherboard, a Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast, according to device mangler.
    So far, the solution that seems to have worked, is unchecking the box to let windows turn it off to save power.

    I will likely come back to this post and thread should the problem return, to share any further help I can.

    OK, here's my take so far on this ridiculous game:
    We have 5 computers. Four of them are dual-core and play the game fine (Pentium 4 3.4GHz H/T, Core 2 Duo E5200, Core 2 Duo E6750, Athlon II X2 215). The single core PC is the one having the trouble (Athlon 64 3400+).

    DragonloadJoe said he was having trouble with his Realtek RTL8139. I noticed that my single core PC also has a Realtek RTL8139 NIC and thought maybe the game was currently incompatible with it. I tried unchecking "Let windows turn this off to save power" with no luck. I disabled it and added an Intel Pro/1000T Gigabit NIC, also no luck.

    I tried Florian's tcpbuffer program, and that seems to have solved the issue. While the single core PC still takes longer than the duals to render the terrain, it eventually gets there and no time outs.

    I call this game ridiculous because, even though it's still in beta, there is absolutely no reason for a game with 1993 graphics to require such PC demands, server or client. And if it is still this buggy, they shouldn't be charging $21-22 US dollars for it. I paid $15 for Monday Night Combat, and it looks alot prettier and has a heck of alot more going on in-game than Minecraft. Sorry to be this way, but I blindly bought 3 copies for my kids, and I'm starting to regret it.

    **EDIT** I spoke too soon. The tcpbuffer app made great strides in improving the issue, but ultimately did not work...I am not pleased.

    this worked for me, you just need to make sure you have the port as well as ip. played for a half an hour with no probs, where as before i had all the same listed problems and could only play for like 10 seconds before java crash

    I wish i had found this thread before buying. Maybe they should put a disclaimer when purchasing that reads: "we have better thing to do than fix a fundamental flaw in how this game connects user to server and vise versa. Buy at your own risk".

    Got a brand new Dell with Windows 7 that works fine. the older PC running XP and the same Realtek NIC card people keep mentioning keeps throwing the java error at me when connecting online. Router and even PC internet work fine but immediately after joining a server the information is just not getting across correctly.
