I am seeking help on behalf of my nephew. (minecraft id ilikechairs7).
His email account can't even log in to this forum and thus I had to use mine.
I just bought a copy of minecraft (using that lousy microsoft account which gives so much trouble) (my old mojang account has no such issue).
However, unable to access minecraft multiplayer.
I search in the net and some articles mentioned about xboxone (What, I am using PC not xbox. What nonsense MS) and I signed in the account and can't find any of the mentioned settings.
Will appreciate any help any of you can offer me. Also like to check if unable to resolve, how shall I go about getting my refund?
Btw, I had dropped a message via minecraft form but based on past experience, they will probably not get back.
what microsoft account? currently you use mojang accounts for java until they merge the 2 systems, where did you buy minecraft from? is the launcher logging in normally?
New accounts have already been requiring Microsoft accounts for some time; https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/login gives me the option to log in/create a new account with a Microsoft account or log in with a Mojang account, and 1.16.4 includes "safety features" to help protect children (hence the warning on profiles which use older or modded versions); the OP's specific issue is likely due to the age on their account marking them as underage and/or the parental controls marking it as restricted, which will lock out multiplayer:

Ah makes sense they start with new accounts, then change the old ones after
Pray that will never happen. Fed up with Microsoft account. Mojang no issues and serve me well.
Microsoft account waste so much of my time without any constructive use. I just want to gift my nephew a copy of minecraft. And now I had to waste time trying to figure out how to fix it so that my nephew can join server game
2. Click on add a family member and key in the child email. (set the child to member)
3. After child accept your invite, go https://account.microsoft.com/family/ and select under child account More Options -> Xbox-online settings (see xbox.png attachment)
4. Click on the child portrait and click on Xbox one/WIndows 10 online safety tab. Set whatever you want to allow. (see settings.png)
5. Now your child can sign in to minecraft and access multiplayer
I can’t thank you enough for posting this! I paid for Minecraft Java approx 6 months ago. I have wasted countless hours creating accounts, family accounts, and reading forums trying to find specifically the answer to your same question! My frustration with Microsoft is beyond! Thanks so much for posting!

Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
Hi, this is my mojang account which is working perfectly (praise Mojang).
However, I bought another copy just recently for my nephew (I am unable to log in to this forum using his email and thus using my account to post).
His copy is Microsoft account which is not working.
Thus will appreciate any help to get his microsoft account copy working or guide me on how to refund his copy.
I buy it from minecraft website
Hi TheMasterCaver,
Thanks for your links.
I tried following it and going into the xbox.com but just can't find where to change the settings

For anyone who encounter this issue, I discovered the solution.
Hopefully it will help anyone who encounter such issue and not waste your time trying to figure it out and getting frustrated.
Btw, thanks TheMasterCaver for your help.
How to resolve it

1. Sign in to a microsoft account of an adult (via https://account.microsoft.com/account) and select Family tab (See bar.png attachment)
Just an update, up to now MS had not get back to me even though I had raised the issue in the minecraft page contact form.
I seriously doubt that MS will reply and if they reply, will update this forum.
Otherwise mean that they never get back to me.
