I've ignored this issue for a while until recently. Whenever I fire up older versions of Minecraft, most of the times, these versions are 1.0.0, or Beta 1.7.3, and there are no cheats within the vanilla game, unless I install the famous mod known as SinglePlayerCommands.
However, when I do this, it completely ignores the separate directory I've given it, and uses the default directory, meaning whenever I go back to 1.16 or whatever, my settings are completely reset, which is a big issue.
I've been using this guide, which TileEntity gave me a month ago, when trying to load one of the oldest mods (it was actually a language pack, but still) available on CurseForge.
I assume it has something to do with the .json file for versions 1.5.2 and below (I'm trying to use 1.0.0), but please help me out!
Versions older than 1.6 do not support custom game directories (support wasn't added to the game itself until 1.6 and Mojang will never update older versions to fix bugs, even game-breaking bugs); you'll need to run them in the default location and instead run newer versions in a separate directory, unfortunately, this means that running multiple modded instances will require manually moving mods/configuration files (otherwise each custom directory will have its own mods folder and configuration files. options.txt (where vanilla saves its settings) is probably cross-compatible across many old versions, it wasn't until 1.7 or so they they started changing it. Another thing to know is that versions prior to 1.7 saved statistics and achievements in .minecraft\stats and these will also reset (at least partially) if you downgrade).

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
No, it does use separate directories when using the vanilla .jar. Only when I use a custom .jar, it doesn't use it.
Here you can see me using the vanilla .jar for release 1.0.0
