okay so i downloaded some mods and this is my first time ever trying to run mods. They’re in the correct folder but they don’t show up, if you’re wondering i have the decocraft mod and the 1.12.2 forge.
-Consider the version of Minecraft you want to play modded (1.12.2 and 1.14.4 are not the same version and they don't play the same mods, 1.10.2 and 1.12.2 are not the same but sometimes 1.9.4 and 1.10.2 were supported or 1.12 to 1.12.2 is supported but this is not always the case). Treat each version as it's own.
-Install the Modloader (Forge, Liteloader, Fabric, depends on which supports what)
-Once it installs, creates a mods folder and so on, put the mods and library/cores if the mod needs it (check the changelog just encase and a dependency will be listed).
-Once that is done check to see if the profile created. If it did then you can play, if not go to Installations and select it. Forge 1.12.2 and below versions appear under Release 1.0, Forge 1.13+ and other modloaders like Rift and Fabric appear above 1.13 and 1.14 (even in-between snapshots if you have them visible).
-If it loads correctly it will show the main screen, what modloader your using, how many mods loaded and so on.

Okay so i have forge. The 12.2.12 version and i launched it in vanilla. There are currently 6 mods in there not counting some programs to run various others. And the mods are in the games general folder

1. ensure you are launching the forge profile and not the vanilla profile
2. ensure the mods folder is in the game directory, which may be different than the Minecraft directory. If you're not sure what it is, just launch and use the resource packs menu to open the resource packs folder - the parent directory of that (1 folder up) is the game directory.
Okay so i launched it in the forge profile and i was using a youtube video to do this and i launched the mods folder through pressing the windows button(forgot to mention i was on there) and R then putting the mods in the folder that said mods.

that's the .Minecraft directory, which may or may not be the same as the game directory, hence why I told you to use the resourcepacks folder method instead.
Go to your .minecraft folder and find the "mods" folder. (create it if it doesn't exist) Put your mods in there. If you've changed your game directory though, it will be different.
So i moved all the mods into the resource pack folder and nothing showed up
that's not what I had said to do at all. I said to use the resourcepacks menu to directly open the resourcepacks directory, go up one folder, and then use the mods folder in that one.

Hello; I'll take a stab:
1. Did you open the vanilla game?
2. Have you run Forge 12.2 after running vanilla?
On my machine, there exists a mods folder \mods\12.2(version); that's where I put 12.2 mods.
